Read moreI recently had the pleasure of revisiting PIER 39 at The Embarcadero, San Francisco, and it was a wonderful experience once again. My last visit was in 2018, and coming back on Monday, June 10, 2024, to capture and recreate my memories of this vibrant place was truly delightful.
PIER 39 never ceases to amaze me with its lively atmosphere and stunning views. This time, the weather added a unique charm to my visit. The clouds and chilled, windy air created a refreshing and invigorating environment. It was a perfect blend of San Francisco’s classic foggy ambiance and the lively, bustling energy of the pier.
The view from PIER 39 is absolutely breathtaking. Overlooking the Bay, you get a fantastic perspective of iconic landmarks like Alcatraz Island and the Golden Gate Bridge. Despite the chill in the air, the scenery was as captivating as ever, and it felt like seeing it all anew.
One of the highlights of PIER 39 is the sea lions basking on the docks. Their playful antics and loud barks are always a joy to watch and add a distinctive character to the pier. The variety of shops, restaurants, and entertainment options available make it a perfect spot for visitors of all ages. From delicious seafood to unique souvenirs, there’s something for everyone.
The chilled, windy air on this visit made it feel quintessentially San Francisco. It’s always a good idea to bring a jacket when visiting, as the weather can be quite cool, especially by the water. But the crisp air only added to the experience, making it more memorable.

Read moreLet me tell you a little about it!
I live only a couple of blocks from Pier 39, and I regularly visit it when I go for a leisurely early evening walk. Despite having been there tens, if not hundreds, of times over the years, I never get tired of it!
The pier has a few decades of history. Here is the very summarized version:
The construction on Pier 39 first began sometime in 1977 and was completed in late 1978. The pier's attractions include stores, restaurants, and street performers. Pier Market Seafood Restaurant, Eagle Cafe, and Swiss Louis Italian & Seafood Restaurant are three of the originals that are still operating.
One of the most popular attractions of Pier 39 is the sea lions. The sea lions first began arriving at the pier in January 1990 and immediately began drawing attention. The sea lion population grew over the years and reached a peak number at around 1700 in November 2009. The city of San Francisco added a few new floats to the docks to make more room for the bulky lions. These days, their numbers are far less than 1700, but they still attract a lot of attention from visitors.
Pier 39 is also known for its beautiful views. You can see the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, and the Bay Bridge from the pier. There are also boat tours that leave from the pier, which are a great way to see the bay.
Another fun thing to do at Pier 39 is to visit the Aquarium of the Bay. The aquarium has many exhibits featuring local marine life, and it's a great place to learn more about the creatures that live in the waters around San Francisco.
Overall, Pier 39 is a wonderful place to visit. Whether you are a local or a tourist, there is always something new to see and do. The mix of attractions, shops, and dining options, along with the lively atmosphere, makes it a must-visit spot in...
