It was a Friday night. No lines at the door. I should have suspected something was up.
I've been coming to Marnee Thai, off and on for probably 15 years. I came more often when I lived in the area, less so now since I don't. I wasn't a regular, since it was often crowded and a bit pricey, but I came enough to think it was solid Thai food. However after my most recent visit, unfortunately I will no longer be a customer. I ordered the Angel Wings. These are good; crunchy with a sweet and spicy sauce. Small portions, as we all know. What I don't like is calling these Angel Wings. These are chicken wings. Angel Wings are stuffed. Just irks me. Next was Chicken Satay. Pretty standard fare. Tender and pretty good, although not quite hot (temperature) enough. Green Mango salad. Pretty good flavor. Mango was crunchy and sweet. However very skimpy on the prawns; only 3 pieces. Pad See Ew with beef. Noodles were soggy and congealed with the sauce. The beef was totally inedible, so tough that after chewing several times, had to spit it out. And it wasn't just 1 or 2 pieces, I tried all the pieces that I put on my plate. Every single piece was the same tough inedible leather. Everyone at my table said the same thing. So we finished and I asked for the check. As I put my credit card down, the lady took away my plate (with the uneatened pieces of beef on it) and I casually mentioned to her to let the chef know about the beef. She simply shrugged her shoulders and didn't say another word. I wasn't asking for the dish to be comped, given some dessert for free or anything of the sort. I just wanted some type of acknowledgement or apology. For me the service and most importantly food quality has gone way down. No wonder there weren't any lines. I still see people inside. Maybe you will drink the cool-aid. As for me, there's no...
Read moreHeard great things about Marnee Thai and I had been to the second location before, so I was excited about coming to the original location. The restaurant is a little too cramped. Even skinny people can't squeeze in between the cracks.
The food was good, but halfway through our meal, the table next to us complained that they found 3 strands of hair in their food. The woman (who I assumed was the owner) kept insisting that all her cooks wore hats and that they did not have such fine hair. She agreed to take the charge off the bill, but kept reiterating that she did not know how the hair got there and can't be her staff. The portions are not big, but enough to be full. We ordered the Harmok, potstickers, fresh spring rolls and the Tom Kha soup, all of which were tasty. We decided to take the mango with sticky rice to go. Upon arriving at home, I open up the box and what do I find?! Yes, a strand of hair in the coconut sauce for the rice.
Bottom line, although the food was good, it is not the most convenient location and the hygiene needs some work. Although the staff was attentive, the owner is WAY too pushy. If I am already here eating at your restaurant, you don't have to tell me that every dish is wonderful and delicious. The hairs and the owner definitely left much to be desired....probability of...
Read moreI’m really confused as to why this place only has a 4.2 rating (at time of this review). Thai food is my absolute favorite cuisine & I think that this is the best Thai food I have had in all of California. We got the roti with peanut curry sauce, mango chicken fried rice, beef pad see ew, and Hor Mok.
The roti was a beautiful appetizer & the curry sauce was slightly more runny than anticipated but had a fantastic flavor nonetheless. I don’t think I’ve ever had mango fried rice & it was really good but the mango did not add much to the dish, in my opinion. The pad see ew had a wonderful flavor & I loved the amount of egg they put in it. And finally wow the hor mok!!! I had never had this dish but I was very impressed by the banana leaf presentation and the flavor of the snapper & curry mousse was really good, especially over the fried rice.
Unfortunately my acid reflux was acting a fool so I didn’t try any of the spicy dishes which I hear this place is known for but all of the above were not spicy but were extremely flavorful. I will definitely be coming back next time I’m in SF, and hopefully I’ll get to try the coconut hotcakes if they’re still on the seasonal menu. This place is Michelin starred for a...
