In the world of sandwiches it is highly competitive. shops are putting ingredients that normally you wouldn't be put on a sandwich 20 years ago. Yellow submarine seems to stick with the basics and has been doing them good for years now
There are certain factors that i like about YS: one, they toast and heat their meet. Something so simple like this can change a sandwich entirely and still today not a lot of places do it. Two, they keep it simple. They do go for fancy garlic spreads or special cheeses, just the normal works with a splash of hot sauce.
I wasn't excited about their high prices, i ordered a salami sandwich with cheese and the works (lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, lettuce, mayo/mustard and hot sauce) and it was $10. Sandwich was about 12" long - pretty big sub, but $10 is probably one of the more expensive sandwiches. Even ike's place doesn't charge that much and they cram hella crap into their sandwiches.
I did enjoy their sandwiches, because i can appreciate the simplicity of it. I love sandwiches and i can't believe that some places can't taste better than a turkey and cheese sandwich that you make at home for free. Its hard to justify coming back because i make this sandwich at home as well since its not overly complex.
So here is my overall rating
Would I recommend this place? Yes! Does the sandwiches taste good? Yes! Is it worth $10? Questionable
Its like going to the movies and paying $10 vs staying home and...
Read moreThe Yellow Submarine has been on my bucket list since I moved into the city a couple of weeks ago - I love sandwiches and given the great reviews, this place looked like they did them right.
I finally had the chance to go a couple of days ago after waking through the park. When I walked in I was greeted by the two brothers (?) working the kitchen as well as what looked like their mom in the back. I love family-run places so that alone made me excited.
I ordered a large pepper steak with the homemade hot sauce since it was recommended to me by a friend. The prep looked pretty straightforward, but I did notice that the meat looked really fresh and had a nice red colour. When they finally gave me the sub I almost dropped it - it was that heavy! I took it home ASAP. When I opened it I couldn’t believe how freaking massive this thing was! I’m usually good with eating a lot of food but I was legitimately worried I wouldn’t finish.
Straight-up: it was a really, really good sandwich. I ended getting all of the toppings, but when I go back I’ll probably cut some just so I can taste the ingredients better. One thing I’d change is probably the size - a large is waaayy too big for one sitting, and the price reflects that at $12. Ideally there would be a half order for $6-7, but even the medium is pretty hefty.
All in all though, it was satisfying as hell, and it’ll definitely be my go-to if I’m ever...
Read moreThe large sandwiches are indeed large. This place makes subway look like a wooden (or plastic for the slower) kids train set.
The owners, mom and son I believe, as well as some super friendly and competent employees who have never (in my many years of continued enjoyment) not greeted me with a huge smile as I walked into the cozy ordering area.
The Reuben is very very good. I usually get this, although the turkey is awesome in its own non thanksgiving right. There is also the tuna sandwich. .. yeah. It's good. They use onions in it Thank the Lord...
Garlic fries!!!! They are not your stereotypical fries though, they are hand cut, and not into sticks, but entire crosscut (sagittal is it?) Planar slices of the whole potatoe..... mmmmmm... don't ask stupid questions and I don't care about your comments. Lol. Just order it please. It's got real garlic :)
I remember in the past enjoying (more of a glutinous devouring akin to lion feeding time at sf zoo) curly fries here as well.... and I remember they...
