Big E Cafe — Restaurant in San Jose

I'd gladly give five stars for the great staff and service. The owner, unfortunately, has decided that being upfront about his pricing and credit card surcharge. isn't something he's willing to do. There's lots of stuff on the wall menu, with prices listed. He then claims he gives a cash discount. Well, not really. I buy something, pay cash, but I'm charged the standard price that's listed on the wall. I buy something, pay with a credit card, and I'm charged extra.

The owner claims the "cash discount" is part of the listed price and that legally he has to do it this way. ???

We tend to be consistent in how we think and act. I'm concerned about what other ways the owner of this business deals with his employees and customers. Would he also claim that a day off is included in a work day? That ingredients in his food products are included when they are not? I don't have any evidence that he does those things, but doing them would be right in line with claiming a discount is included in his standard pricing. He's also got a sign that there's no public restroom, but, well guess what, he doesn't mean that either. If they like you, you may use the restroom.

My complaint isn't about the money. He suggested I go to Starbucks and I'll do that from now on. Integrity and honesty are important to me. I'd gladly have paid a little more if he'd have raised his prices than feel like he's trying to fool his customers and doesn't have the respect for them to be upfront with them. Unfortunately, I guess this sort of thing is becoming more and more common. Lack of integrity is now included...

Great food but everything else here makes me confused. Empanadas are fresh and served hot to you. I def would recommend the lomo, the pizza one (great cheese inside), and the Spicy Thai Chicken (I'd rename it Thai Chicken Curry; but its great). The Philly Cheese steak does not reflect the flavors of a true Philadelphia Cheese Steak but if you are looking for a beef and onion empanada with random cheese give it a try (sorry I'm from PA). Good selection and the friendly staff were very open to giving recommendations. The pricing structure is odd; different based on meat, time of day, etc just make one or two prices #Simplify 1950s Oldies music playing... huh? Not that I dislike that music but what is the tie to the them? The random fishing photos and sports jerseys on the wall make me think they forgot to take down from the previous owners (sure not just feels random) and last... lets talk about your sign from the parking lot. Why is the word COFFEE bigger then Empanadas!?! This place has solid food, a good location, great staff but its like nobody thought through the...

I ordered a chicken empanada and a steak empanada. The chicken empanada was big in size, had great taste, and was filling. They're definitely was more meat than crust which was a surprise for me. As for the steak empanada, the taste was not what I expected. There is green olives, raisins, and onions with the steak. In my opinion the raisins and the olives were an off-putting taste for me but that is me. Again this empanada was filled with plenty of steak and on both of the empanadas the crust was very tasty and slightly buttery. Of course I only had the two for the savory empanadas but the dessert apple cranberry was an absolute must have again. The apples were largely diced, the filling was smooth but not too sugary, and once again it was the right amount of filling for the amount of crust. I do want to go back and try some other ones because the empanadas overall were very savory and filling. Big e Cafe has the feeling of a small coffee house but surprisingly has very filling foods.
