RIP to the best Japanese curry in the Bay. Apparently, the owners of Kizuna have retired and what used to be the best non-sushi Japanese restaurant in the Bay has turned into a very generic American-Japanese restaurant. I came last week to revisit one of my favorite restaurants only to find the place has changed ownership and now run by Koreans who have a very generic menu. The new staff is very nice, and they've freshened up the place but what made Kizuna great is now gone. The curry has a bit of a sweet and sour after-flavor and tastes like what I can make using one of the roux boxes available at Ranch 99 and the chicken was thin and overly crispy. The agedashi tofu was decent but nothing to phone home about. I really miss the original curry that came with thick, juicy pieces of meat and rich, dark curry that's flavorful and complex. The old curry tasted homemade; not it tastes like it's made from boxed roux. So sad; this was the best Japanese curry in the US and now I don't know where to get the authentic flavor when I'm not in Japan. Kizuna is now just another generic sushi-based Japanese restaurant catered to Americans. I hope it gets better but I won't be back.

My parents have been raving about this place for a while so I finally gave in and went with them. Apparently a chef from Gombei has gone to start his own restaurant. The service is very good and what pushes me towards a 5. Workers came and greeted us right away. Food took a while to make, but everything came out at the same time and they refilled our drinks more than needed. The price is just a tad bit on the higher side, but can't say much there with everything in the Bay Area nowadays. The value is good. I was surprised how big my parent's tendon (tempura donburi) about $12 was and the quantity for my combination ($15) was just perfect. They provide a very small appetizer for your meal while you wait. Easy parking, good food, good service. The menu and pieces of paper taped onto the wall makes it feel a little less upscale, but it's still their soft opening so I think they are experimenting.

Came here with my dad on a weekday afternoon to no wait but a super packed place! Food: I came here a year ago and boy have things gotten better! I got the curry udon and portions were massive but also the flavoring was super on point and it wasn’t an overwhelming amount of spice or salt. Also, the little side dish of the sushi was super nice and well needed with all of the curry I had. It’s not a lot of side dishes but there’s enough food for one person. My dad got the salmon teriyaki and beef teriyaki and the beef was super super flavorful and juicy! Service: The waitress here was extremely patient and kind and made the experience better as she stopped to explain things we didn’t understand on the menu. Ambiance: Super casual and fast! The interior is clean and very much a place to go with friends. Overall enjoyed the experience and would come again!

If you have been to this restaurant before, this is now a totally different restaurant! It seems the previous owner has retired, and transferred the place to different person. The menu has totally changed and it has lost the original Japanese flavor. I’m very disappointed that the new owner is using the same restaurant name and selling totally different things and they taste not good.

Karaage fried chicken is gone from the menu and they now have a popcorn chicken. It’s very thick layer of starch and covered in sauce. Nothing close to the old karaage chicken and nothing to do with Japanese food.

Udon taste like one of those from frozen package and over cooked. Veggie is not fresh and beef is not thin slices of meet you would expect but small chunks. This has nothing to do with Japanese udon to be frank.

They are also playing pop music in the restaurant, overall deco also has changed and nothing to do with Japan.

I hope they change a name and not mislead people who have been...

The original Kizuna was amazing as a homey place for good Japanese comfort food. Not like Hyuga that left me stressed out and underwhelmed. Plus the side of salad with carrot dressing (super Japanese) and macaroni salad only added to the homey vibe. It was my go-to place for years and the curry had such a rich flavor to it. I wish the original owners well in their retirement, it was a place us locals always loved coming to.

Unfortunately, the new ownership decided to change the model and I can’t say it’s left me wanting to go back. Sushi places are a dime a dozen and, being Japanese, I don’t care for expansive menus that can’t decide what they want to be. If you’re going to push the sushi - push the sushi with the high quality fish and top grade rice unlike other places. The katsu curry was decent enough but the sauce lacked flavor complexity that the previous restaurant had. Nothing to write home about given the price. It lacked the authenticity that the previous...
