RIP to the best Japanese curry in the Bay. Apparently, the owners of Kizuna have retired and what used to be the best non-sushi Japanese restaurant in the Bay has turned into a very generic American-Japanese restaurant.
I came last week to revisit one of my favorite restaurants only to find the place has changed ownership and now run by Koreans who have a very generic menu.
The new staff is very nice, and they've freshened up the place but what made Kizuna great is now gone. The curry has a bit of a sweet and sour after-flavor and tastes like what I can make using one of the roux boxes available at Ranch 99 and the chicken was thin and overly crispy. The agedashi tofu was decent but nothing to phone home about.
I really miss the original curry that came with thick, juicy pieces of meat and rich, dark curry that's flavorful and complex. The old curry tasted homemade; not it tastes like it's made from boxed roux.
So sad; this was the best Japanese curry in the US and now I don't know where to get the authentic flavor when I'm not in Japan. Kizuna is now just another generic sushi-based Japanese restaurant catered to Americans. I hope it gets better but I...
Read moreIf you have been to this restaurant before, this is now a totally different restaurant! It seems the previous owner has retired, and transferred the place to different person. The menu has totally changed and it has lost the original Japanese flavor. I’m very disappointed that the new owner is using the same restaurant name and selling totally different things and they taste not good.
Karaage fried chicken is gone from the menu and they now have a popcorn chicken. It’s very thick layer of starch and covered in sauce. Nothing close to the old karaage chicken and nothing to do with Japanese food.
Udon taste like one of those from frozen package and over cooked. Veggie is not fresh and beef is not thin slices of meet you would expect but small chunks. This has nothing to do with Japanese udon to be frank.
They are also playing pop music in the restaurant, overall deco also has changed and nothing to do with Japan.
I hope they change a name and not mislead people who have been...
Read moreThe original Kizuna was amazing as a homey place for good Japanese comfort food. Not like Hyuga that left me stressed out and underwhelmed. Plus the side of salad with carrot dressing (super Japanese) and macaroni salad only added to the homey vibe. It was my go-to place for years and the curry had such a rich flavor to it. I wish the original owners well in their retirement, it was a place us locals always loved coming to.
Unfortunately, the new ownership decided to change the model and I can’t say it’s left me wanting to go back. Sushi places are a dime a dozen and, being Japanese, I don’t care for expansive menus that can’t decide what they want to be. If you’re going to push the sushi - push the sushi with the high quality fish and top grade rice unlike other places. The katsu curry was decent enough but the sauce lacked flavor complexity that the previous restaurant had. Nothing to write home about given the price. It lacked the authenticity that the previous...
