Pho John — Restaurant in San Jose

Very friendly workers. They're very accommodating and nice! I've been twice and the waitress already recognizes me! John (the chef himself) is frequently walking around talking to the customers seeing how everything is. We had the pleasure of talking to him and hearing about his journey he went through to opening the restaurant and how much love and effort he puts into the food.

We got: #1 Phở đặc biệt #7 Phở Tái, Sườn Bò Bún Chả Hà Nội Phở was very good. Soup wasn't too salty and was very balanced. What stood out almost immediately was the quality of the meat. It was cooked perfectly and was very tender compared to other restaurants where the meat almost feels a little rubbery/tough from being overcooked. The Bún Chả Hà Nội is something that's more unique and isn't typically served at Vietnamese restaurants. The meat was juicy and full of flavor. It comes with fresh herbs/veggies and vermicelli noodles. It was very delicious and filling. It’s hands down the best pho in the Bay Area, especially in San Jose. My husband and son are big pho lovers, and we’ve tried countless places throughout the Bay, particularly in San Jose. Today was our first time trying the Special Combo Pho (#3) and Bún Chả Hà Nội, and both dishes were beyond words.

The pho broth was rich, savory, and absolutely delicious—without MSG! I also loved that they included ngò gai, which is one of my favorite herbs when eating pho. The toppings were fresh and generous.

As for the Bún Chả Hà Nội, the fish sauce had such a unique flavor. I’m usually not a fan of bún chả, but I genuinely enjoyed it today. Beyond these two, the menu offers many other options, and we can’t wait to come back and try them all.

The service was excellent. From the warm greeting at the door to the attentive staff throughout, everything felt welcoming. We even met the owners today—they were very friendly and kind.

Coming from San Francisco and driving all the way down to San Jose I have to admit I came here to eat at my favorite Pho ga Nha. The wait for a Sunday was a good 30-45 mins. I look to the other side and saw a sign that says 25% off so I said….hmmm let me check the place out. I find out Pho John is primarily new. They have a good list of options but if the name outside says Pho…then I had to have pho. The owner was out on the floor going table to table and he was quite nice explaining that they don’t use MSG and only have high quality beef. All his explanation made sense as it did taste like there’s no MSG and the beef was nice and tender. I was also able to chit-chat with the next table and their only concern was to speed up the process just a tad bit. And they were not wrong but I didn’t mind because 15 min wait wasn’t too bad for the food to come out. My verdict? It’s a good alternative when my favorite spot is way busy.
