I went to Baked Blooms for one of her cupcake decorating classes. She's clearly an expert at what she does, and she's very nice, but she's not a great teacher. While I wouldn't take another class with her, there aren't many cake decorating classes around, and her prices are comparable to other cooking classes I've taken. So, if you're really interested in learning from someone in person, it might still be worth it.
For those who want more detail: The goal in the class is to learn 4 new decorating techniques, which is perhaps too much if your brand new, and this makes things rushed. This is exacerbated when the buttercream starts to warm. (She gives you both colors at the start of the 1.5 hour class, giving the color you don't need at first too much time to warm, which makes decorating even harder.)
There were 12 students in the class. It sounds small, but with a bunch of newbies, it means you can't really ask all your questions or get a lot of support. She is happy to help. You just might have to fight for it.
As for the teaching itself, the demos go quickly, and they're hard to see from a distance and around other students. Try to sit front and center. It would be nice if she had one of those overhead mirrors you find in some cooking classes, or if she could go more slowly. It also wouldn't hurt if she showed you a picture of where she was headed before she started.
As for the cupcakes themselves, they're better than what you'd get at Safeway, but they are surprisingly bland. Her work is absolutely lovely, but I wouldn't buy them...
Read moreThese are the cupcakes that dreams are made of, and I will be ordering more and more and more! It couldn't be easier to order online - seriously it's a piece of cake (heh heh). You can see immediately if the date you're interested in is available for her to create your cupcakes and she is so responsive that you can relax and know that they'll be ready you when you need them. She does deliver, though I was out and about, so we met for the cupcake exchange and I drove home very conscious of my precious cargo (I'm serious - if someone had rear ended me I would have been more upset about potential damage to the cupcakes than my car). They are so beautifully boxed, looking exactly like a dreamy bouquet., and honestly she's come up with the perfect way to transport them without being nervous - very sturdy. They are so beautiful in person - the colors are so vibrant they look like they've just been picked! We couldn't wait for dessert and man they did not disappoint. Was there a moment of hesitation before ruining that artistic display? About ten seconds, then get out of the way while we grabbed our choices! I ordered a mix of chocolate and vanilla cake and they were both delicious - light and airy and perfectly baked. And the icing, oh the icing! It is easily the most scrumptious icing I've ever had - not heavy and cloying like some can be - there's just the right touch of saltiness to counteract the sweetness and it is a wonder! Thank you Sarah for making a special night even...
Read moreRecently ordered a Boucake for a small anniversary party — it was lovely! It had peach flower colors that were not what I wanted, but think the image I submitted may have been color adjusted so it looked more pink on my screen, but they viewed it as a certain product they did that included peach tones — so be sure to be VERY specific if there are certain colors you don’t want. Everyone thought it was gorgeous, so I was the only one to notice, lol. It was delicious, although after 24 hours, the frosting was a bit stiff (we had to order for pick up the day before since they were closed on our event day). I would order again...
