Localz Bistro has a fantastic reputation and I was very eager to try the food. I was stoked to see the menu was stacked with some Southern comforts along with some unique twists on fan favorites.
I was hoping to try the Jambalaya, but it's a dinner-only item. There are a few of those so you'll want to plan your visit appropriately. I ordered the Fried Shrimp Po Boy and Chef Chicken Sandwich. The Po Boy is good, but made for a tourist, not a southerner. I like my Po Boys to be loaded with so much shrimp I struggle to close the face of the bread - the sandwich stays pretty neat here. Good, but I won't order again. The Chef Chicken Sandwich is very good, especially with the jalapeno aioli. I'd order again. The Truffle Frites are good, but not worth it if you plan on getting fries as a side. And I'm not a fan of mac-n-cheese, but my table told me the Hatch Mac-N-Cheese is worthy of ordering. I also tried the Orange Tomato Bisque, and the hint of orange really adds a unique taste. It's a win for many, but not for me. The Bread Pudding is really good, but if you like bread pudding, you'll love this one. If you don't (I don't), it's not bad, but won't be the one to change your feelings on the dessert as a whole.
The service was superb. Zoey took incredible care of us, gave very helpful suggestions, and made it an overall great experience. And that goes for all the service staff here. Everyone was helpful and "chill." I may not have loved the food, but I loved the service.
The atmosphere and vibe of this restaurant is great. There's a variety of seating options between indoor or outdoor, and any restaurant bringing tastes of the South to Utah is a winner in my book. The prices are steeper than the satisfaction they provide, but portion sizes are appropriate so it's a style as opposed to feeling robbed. Localz Bistro ultimately isn't my jam, but I will come back for dinner to try that Jambalaya and update my review should it prove...
Read moreLocalz Bistro is exacting what it claims to be. A nice slice of Sandy life in a semi-upscale setting. The overall feel of the place was modern hipster, and the prices reflected that fact. We stopped in while waiting for a tow truck as our car had just broken down in a nearby lot. Having lived in sandy most of my life I decided it was finally time to try out Localz. We were seated promptly even though it was pretty busy. The first thing my wife and I noticed was the very distinct smell of the establishment which we could only describe as "the scent of the soap in public restrooms" somewhat reminiscent of cherries jubilee. Not a bad smell, but any means, just distinct and somewhat out of place. Since we were in a time crunch we opted to try the ceviche and split a doctor pepper. Our server was a great sport and took good care of us even though we were a cheapskate table. The plating of the ceviche left a lot to be desired, it came served in a martini glass with a side of corn chips that looked like they were possibly made in house. The flavor was just okay. The consistency was a bit odd, must of the ingredients were diced, as is usual, but the shrimp was shredded, which was a little odd. The problem was the dish was screaming for salt and being served in a conical glass only afforded a small to layer to be seasoned. For the price of $18 I would have liked a somewhat larger portion as well. Overall Localz was OK. We may venture one more trip since we live so close, but more likely we'll leave them and their haute cuisine prices, standard Cafe fare, and holster atmosphere to those more predisposed to such things and opt, instead, for...
Read moreThe food at Localz is good, so good that we’ve been coming here 3-4x/week for weeks. Many of the servers know us by name/know our favorite meals. A great neighborhood experience! A dog friendly patio would have been a plus but the food and service were great so our dog stayed home.
Last night I called to see if they had obtained the license to have dogs on the patio. I was give permission (I believe from a co-owner) to bring my dog and keep her to the side of the patio area. That went well and I did the same tonight. A man who I believe is the other co-owner came out to tell me they didn’t have a license to have dogs in the patio. I was aware if that; hence keeping the dog to the side. When I shared that I’d gotten permission to bring her and that we’d said we’d been coming there 3-4 times a week (sans dog) he said he’d have to talk to his wife and then became what I’d call accusational, implying that I’d known the rules all along and broke them anyway.
Despite not being finished with my meal I removed the dog. I went inside to thank him for bringing low country food to the Salt Lake Valley and tell him how much we’d enjoyed the food and the servers. I reminded him calmly but directly how the dog came to be there two nights in a row and said that I didn’t appreciate the accusations. I calmly told him that we wouldn’t be back and regretted that. There was NO interactive exchange, NO service recovery effort, NONE. Having owned a small restaurant I was in shock. The loss of our 3-4x/week visits won’t hurt this great place. That attitude toward...
