I came here to check out the chorizo tacos, on recommendation from Brad Johnson's review on the OC Register.
Right off the bat, the chorizo tacos are great. Not as good as Brad mentioned, but probably the best I've had in a while. For me, this is standard, this is how they should be, crispy and salty and delicious. So, yes, they're great, but either the review was overhyped, or I came in an off day for the cook.
We tried the tongue plate and a lot of tacos. Asada, al pastor, birria, barbacoa, carnitas, tongue, and chorizo. The best were the chorizo, birria, and tongue. The rest were just meh, the asada was lacking flavor and pretty dry.
We tried the vegetable-pineapple agua fresca, which was delicious but probably had more sugar than you need for a couple days.
The service is friendly and accommodating. The location is excellent with pleasant cool shaded tables (it's an outdoor patio). Overall, the place was pretty clean.
One thing that was a bit jarring (for lack of a better word) was the big sign outside saying $1.00 mini tacos, but once inside, you'll find that they're actually $1.50. Not a big deal, but should be fixed or rectified. And for the record, $1.00 for the mini tacos would be the right price. The larger ones are 2.25, which is still pretty good, but they did feel a little on the light side when it comes to the filling.
I would like to come back to taste some of the other items, but I'm not in a...
Read moreI have lived in Santa Ana for over 50 years and had tacos from over 40 different taquerias all over the city, but never at El Cabrito on 1st St. I have been told by friends and coworkers that El Cabrito has the best tacos around. Really? the best, so Sat I decided to stop and have a couple tacos. For starters I think I need to get an alignment on my car because of the parking lot pot holes. The customer service at the counter was sloooow as F!*%. I was told the Barbacoa here is the best so that's what I ordered. These are by far the worst tacos I have ever had in my life. The meat was mushy and tasteless. The tortillas were cheap and in pieces. If you were thinking of trying this place out don't waste your time. Their tacos suck. If you want to eat an amazing taco made with love, go to El Michoacano on Bristol and Washington Ave next to the 7-11. Their tocos melt in your mouth. The one star i gave El Cabrito is only because I found $5 in the parking lot when I...
Read morethe food was okay, but honestly small portions for an expensive price. $25 for one plate and the birria is mainly bones and fat than actual meat, it was good but not amazing. we got our food to go and it wasnt actual plates, just deli containers which i guess for some people they would like but for us was just not it. the salsa is really good and the aguas are also good but thats about it.
the parking situation is almost nonexistent. for three people with drinks it came out to almost $100.
maybe if the food was bigger portions and it was a fancier restaurant i could understand the price, but for the way it is now, i don’t recommend coming here unless you got the...
