Mr D's Donut Shop — Restaurant in Shawnee

The owners of this establishment are not as perfect as they like to state as a previous employee, I got to witness behind closed doors how these donuts are made. I have seen employees hand touch the donuts without gloves on. The cleaning method rarely other than I, did I see employees wash dishes using soap. The training process they have does not allow you to be comfortable enough to have the time to learn it yet they knit pick you during your 90-training portion which they did not even give me the 90-day grace period to improve my craft. They say they care about people yet let alone let me go after a month of trying to be perfect like they wanted without any prior knowledge even when they knew I was in the process of moving which now extended that process for me and my daughter. Do not bother applying because they will only waste your time and the wife will only complain daily about stuff you do wrong even when other employees are making countless mistakes themselves. The ownership is a complete joke save your money and your time they expect top quality performance to work overnight but pay you dirt cheap money. I'd read a bunch of great reviews about this place and finally went yesterday, and it was EXCELLENT! Their honey dipped donuts (basically plain glaze) are so good and have nice hint of honey to them. I loved that they had bavarian cream donuts that where rolled in sugar instead of frosted so you could enjoy the actual donut taste. The yeast doughnuts are really, really good. They're obviously not just shipped in, mass produced donuts rings that the shop fries, they must make everything in house.

The cake donuts were also good. A good size, very moist, and the blueberry ones have real blueberries in them. Sweet but not sickeningly so. Definitely worth a visit!

I will say, I do not like overly sweet, excessive frosting/topping-type donuts (I honestly am just not a frosting person). A lot of their donuts are just glazed, so if you love that frosting/many topping/novelty-type donut this may not be your favorite place. Quite possibly the best place to get donuts in KC. It's also more than donuts, it's an experience like no other donut establishment. From the moment you walk in, you feel invited. From the numerous comfortable chairs (not those cheap questionable ones), to the owners themselves smiling and greeting you with sincere kindness. I highly highly recommend this place. I know me and my family will be returning again and again.

Update: We've been close to 20 times, and the owner's hospitality is always amazing. They have also been helping the community during covid. They sell out of donuts fast, for good reason - amazing donuts and amazing owners. Still a 10/10. We'll keep coming back.
