I'm not a "coffee shop" kind of person - I can count the number of times I've been in a Starbucks on both hands - and being a third shifter has made that more true than ever... But, since the first time I stumbled into Z-Spot with my wife (while waiting on an appointment at nearby Greenseed studios), I've been back over and over to enjoy the atmosphere, the incredible food, and yes - even the odd cup of coffee.
The relaxing/inviting environment hits right away, with seating ranging from communal to intimate; you can tell the decor is decades in the making, with an intimate yet clean aesthetic, with books and games on offer as music plays from near the counter. Part of the reason I avoided coffee shops in general is the staff and clientele being less than welcoming, but there isn't a judgemental hipster to be found in either, and every visit I find years-long regulars ordering and chatting in the communal couches or isolated nooks.
Another fear is the inflated cost, which is luckily not the case here. I've gotten everything from sandwiches and soup to espresso and lattes, and they cost less than expected for the quality - even if the wait is a bit longer than a Kwik trip or mcdonalds. It shouldn't have come as a surprise, given the number of gourmet cookbooks lining the shelves, but the made to order food here is mind-blowing... and is the main reason I continue to show up. Whether it's an early-morning breakfast craving, or just to remedy a hangover, I can get a sandwich that hits the spot (no pun intended).
As far as coffee, it's made with the same equipment you'd find any barista using, and I can only judge using a plain black Americano or espresso to say it's just what you'd expect - and at a price you...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis place has great coffee, much better than Starbucks. The food is fantastic- I often get "sick" or nauseous if I eat fastfood. Even subway or cousins subs will make me feel disgusting. The food at Z Spot has never left me feeling bad and I eat there 1-3 times a week. They are extremely clean and use high-quality ingredients in all their food. The ham sandwich and soups are amazing, but I'd especially recommend the psychedelic smoothie, which uses soy milk (I assume its non-dairy, so good for lactose intolerant). Everything costs a little bit more and/or come in smaller portions, but its well worth it to me. I'd rather pay an extra dollar or two and put food in my body that nourishes and won't leave me sick- as does fastfood.
I don't know why another reviewer felt offended when the barista told her it takes 6 minutes to make the sandwich, sometimes people just don't have the time to wait. I think said reviewer has something stuck up their rear or is ageist. I've never experienced any of the issues stated. Both Jeff and Travis are friendly and helpful when ordering, as are the rest of the staff.
I don't mind the $5 minimum for credit cards. I visit Madison regularly and several restaurants (like the Mermaid Cafe) don't accept credit/debt cards whatsoever! This is because of the dictatorial requirements credit card companies impose on merchants and the fees. I think more stores and coffee shops should ban plastic cards, and everybody should use them a...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI was visiting from Michigan for a long weekend and was looking for a local spot to grab coffee and pastries for the family. Z Spot was very close by so we gave it a shot. We ordered a large variety of pastries from muffins to brownies to scones to Rice Krispies, as well as three coffee drinks. My one gripe was that the espresso in my cappuccino was on the burnt side, as was my grandmaās mocha. My partnerās latte was perfect though. Iād chalk that up to our large order however, with only two people working. Iāve been in the coffee industry so I get it!
The pastries, however⦠I might drive seven hours back just to get some more of them. Every single thing we tried was so tasty. Lemon muffins, espresso brownies, carrot cake muffin, berry scones. Everything so good.
The customer service was phenomenal. They had us come inside even though the lobby was closed to wait for our order since it would be a moment. They helped us carry our boxes out to our car.
I canāt wait to visit Sheboygan again so I can come...
