My brother and I recently stopped into the alcove for lunch. It had been a few years. I was reminded of a place we frequented with our parents as children. The food was absolutely delicious and I left miserable. That is to be taken as a compliment. I don't usually have a large appetite but I just couldn't help myself. Many times they will offer an "all you can eat" special. My face always lights up when I see the sign in the window. We grabbed a corner booth reminiscent of those 50s style diners. First I noticed our waitress was super friendly. I asked about the brand of coffee they served and asked if it had been changed in the last 20 years. As we were finishing, she brought over a bag of coffee and showed me the brand. I am a bit of a coffee connoisseur and by that I don't mean a $7 cup of Starbucks but a fresh ground cup of brewed strong -hot yet mellow coffee. And yes it was the same coffee I had 20 years earlier when my dad was still around and we occasionally had breakfast there. Folks, this is another one of those home cooked meals you can have away from home. You are subject to run into anyone at the Alcove. A lot of folks who work downtown frequent this place. You can sit at the bar, in a booth, or in the dining room. I worked downtown for a number of years until the dreaded p-demic. I'm so glad that the Alcove survived that mess. After all this time, I was pleasantly surprised when I walked into that same warm friendly atmosphere. It gave me a feeling of stepping back in a time machine into one of those restaurants from the 60s -70s given the decor and the range of clients. You will find awesome food, people smiling, chatting, laughing. It's a regular melting pot as you will find contractors, lawyers, clerks, bankers, retirees and people from all walks of life agreeing on one thing. This place is incredible. The coffee is hot and consistent. I Heard lots of first names tossed around not trying to dip in on conversations but the chatter lent itself to a unique atmosphere and is reminiscent of a friendlier time when people took the time to eat lunch and digest, refuel and have a midday break before returning to work. The alcove has served downtown Sidney a good number of years. It's been there for as long as I can remember and I am nearly 60. It's early enough this Saturday that I'm thinking about breakfast right now. I'll see you there. You can buy, I'll leave a nice, well...
Read more5/4/24.Stopped in for lunch today. Ordered a Rueben and onion rings. They were a little greasy, but OK. Not quite sure what I got, but it WAS NOT a Rueben. Had regular beef roast or brisket. It was good, very tender and tasty but it wasn't corned beef or pastrami as it should be. Don't remember if they made it with rye bread or what. Swiss cheese or provolone---not sure of that either. 1000 island dressing was real good. Homemade, but had to wait for them to make it. Sandwich should have been warmed up, but it wasn't worth it. Don't get me wrong it was still a good sandwich, but far from the posted Rueben on the menu. I'll keep eliminating items. Tenderloin was real good a few weeks ago.
April-----Breakfast just didn't compare. I'll go back, but I'll not have what I had. Biscuits and gravy. Sorry guys on...
Read moreA few months ago the waitress said we can have a to go box even though we order an all you can eat. Fine so that happened a few times.over a month. Then a new policy you can have a to go box for food you didn't finish. Then again we said fine that too lasted for a month. Then about a month after and following the new policy for about 6 visits. Another waitress came back screaming and yelling that no to go boxes. If she would stick to one policy fine. Not change up the policy every month. Plus ofen times the bill for two was over 40. We eat there ofren. The waitresses and owner was laughing about it. How rude. We have not been there since we was eating there 4...
