Okay, as far as Korean goes locally, this is honestly the last place I would go. Trust me, I have been well traveled and eaten Korean around the world. If you are pressed for Korean and are in Simi There is one other and better choice off Tapo. The people are also friendlier. Its worth your time to check that out. I have come to what is now Surjang three times just in case my prior experiences were a one off.... they are not. (by the way, the name has changed.... again... now its Surjang) Years ago, this location was Oaks Korean BBQ.... Wow have things changed.. Oaks was great. This place, not so much.
If you go just solo, they WILL NOT allow you to cook. Actually, they were kind of rude about it too. I think that is because they are offended I did not come with many people, so the bill was not going to be as high as they like. Anyway, for a solo person, your meal is cooked in the back kitchen as a meal you pre-order. Rice, your "ONE" order of meat, Egg cake, Japchae (Clear Noodles that should be hot, but here they served cold) and vegies. One of the primary reasons I go to a Korean BBQ is for the experience of cooking. Even if solo... Nope, not here.
The service is slow. All three times I have gone, the seating is in the rear off to the side. The atmosphere is almost like eating the the Kitchen as there are racks and storage that you would see in the kitchen. Stuff was piled up on one booth. Its kind of ugly to be honest. Though it is likely clean, it does not look clean. Not a good Korean Restaurant vibe at all.
The food on a scale from 1-10 is a 4 at best. Seriously... not trying to be mean. Just honest. Its almost Okay.
Again, I would go to the Korean BBQ on Tapo St or go to Thousand Oaks as There is a Korean BBQ in the Janss Mall. Both options are FAR better options.
Sorry for the not so good review Surjang. You need to step it up. You may want to think about allowing your customers to cook at the table even if it is only one person. I would have...

Finally, we were seated. Then they said "last call 830" 🤣Service was trashy. Grill was faulty. The server used our tong deal with fire and then left it super hot on our table. I grabbed it not knowing that she used it as a tool. She also used my spoon to tap the insides of the grill. Talk about gross. 😅
This place used to be called "Top Chef" now it's Surauang. Save yourself. There better kbbq in the area. 🥹
NEVER COMING BACK HERE 🥹
$45 per person. Not worth it at all.
7/20/24 update: they have a last call for meat at 8:30ish p.m.
I'll make this quick and simple because you don't need an autobiographical review. 🤙🏽
Carpool if possible ✅ limited parking
Good food ✅ if the servers don't smile, it's okay. You're there for food, not their smiles. Although a smile would be nice.
This kbbq is good, so I'll more likely revisit. ✅
Feel free to...
Read moreas many other comments on here say, the staff and owners are miserable and provided terrible service.
story goes like this: i ordered over the phone for pickup, and got to the restaurant and there was only one other family eating there. the older man (i'm presuming the owner) passed me by and didn't greet me and gave me a bad look. the older lady (i'm assuming the other owner) came to me and asked what i ordered. she then said the price to me, which i couldnt hear her properly, so i asked her once again, and she yelled "IT'S $18.18" at me. i then asked her for hot sauce, and she let out an audible groan before getting it for me.
the food was mediocre at best.
i understand that my skin color is brown, and that i may dress a little shabby, but this is no way to treat a customer. i work as a doctor, so i know what good service from good restaurants looks like.
i live less than a mile away and would love to support my local restaurants, but i dont think i will be going back...
