Chester's Pastry Pantry Bakery — Restaurant in Somers Point

I have been coming here for years! Always loved everything's they make! Over the past year I noticed when I would come during the week the stuff was always 100% amazing like it's always been. Then I started to notice if I came on a weekend day like Friday, Saturday, or Sunday I would get filled donuts and there would be absolutely no filling in them whatsoever. There was 1 time I purchased a dozen and 4 had no filling at all. That's when I just stopped going for month's. Then I stopped one Wednesday because I was in the area and it was amazing again so I started making the drive again from time to time. Then I went on a Saturday and well let's just say the donuts were literally 50% smaller then they were the week prior when I had bought on a Wednesday and they were so well done they weren't even enjoyable at all . So again I stopped going for a while. Today I was in the area so I stopped for Valentine's day! I arrived at 8:20am and there was not 1 sprinkled donut left not 1!!!! On a holiday how does that even happen so early in the am??? Ok whatever, I purchased $30 worth of baked goods and give my debit card as I normally would and I look down at my receipt and I have a service fee on my receipt! No signs posted, not informed giving me the chance to pay cash! I am so beyond disappointed in what this bakery has become. I can't believe you are charging a service fee and not even letting people know when we spend that much money!! I will most definitely be posting everywhere because I think people need to know this is not the same bakery it once was. I would rather pay more money to have the same quality I always have!!! I love the pastries here and old time feel of the shop's interior very much, and will be back once the pandemic is over. However I'd give customer service a one star here. Today I accidentally overstepped a strip of duct tape on the floor that I didnt initially see (placed down for covid safety measures) while visiting the shop and was promptly yelled at in an aggressive tone by one of the older ladies working there...in front of other shoppers. I felt embarrassed and left without buying anything. I 100% support covid restrictions and guidelines/ closely follow them myself, but there was no excuse for the way I was treated. I understand these are stressful times, but I also believe that effective rule enforcement usually means de-escalating issues instead of targeting customers for public chastising. I've been to this shop 4 or 5 times and outside of the same person being very rude to my partner before for not having cash on hand (it's cash only and we didnt know), we have had pleasant experiences going here - plus the pastries are so good! I needed ten dozen donuts for a local event and since I'm not local I looked around for a place with good reviews. Chester's seemed to be a great spot to hit and they did NOT disappoint! I called less than a day in advance and the ladies sprung to action. They were kind and accommodating with my timeline.

I picked up the donuts at 7am and upon arrival I was excited with how busy they were. It had a "hole-in-the-wall" feel to it but I like that in local places. They had plenty of help on the inside and I was immediately warmly greeted. They helped me load my haul and I was off.

The donuts were amazing! I ordered five dozen glazed and five dozen chocolate. I had multiple people find me and thank me profusely. One person said, "That was the best glazed donut I've had in my life."
