I must thank the Food Network show 'Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives' for knowing this place existed in Somers Point, NJ. After seeing their segment on 'The Grilled Cheese & Crab Cake Co.' I made a note of the restaurants info and marked it on Google Maps, and I am sooooo very glad that I did.
It's not a large place located in the middle of a small strip of storefronts, but it is definitely worth putting on your itinerary if you are going to be anywhere near there. We started with the "daily special" for that particular day, which was a dish I believe they called the "Mac & Cheese Eruption", which consisted of five onion rings on top of their signature Mac & Cheese with cheese sauce poured on the top. It was outstanding and we treated it like an appetizer among our party while waiting on the remainder of the order. Needless to say, it had been devoured within minutes of receiving. I had the "Crab Melt & fries" (Maryland crab cake on Monterey Jack grilled cheese w/o tomato) and an order of "Angry Mac & Cheese" (their signature Mac & Cheese w/jalapenos & sriracha sauce). Both dishes were absolutely delicious! The Maryland style crab cake, made with large pieces of lump crab, was the hands down trophy winner for 'Best Crab Cake I've Ever Tasted Award!' I can not describe in words how amazing it was, you just have to try it for yourself. And I must confess that I am a cheese-a-holic, so for their Mac & Cheese dishes to get a thumbs up from me is no simple task ... but they pulled off with both the "Angry Mac & Cheese" & the "Mac & Cheese Eruption". I just can't wait til I'm nearby again because I will definitely be exploring the Mac & Cheese menu further while having a "Crab Melt".
Oh, and I almost forgot to mention that our server, Sam, was very helpful in assisting us as this was our first, but not the last, visit to 'The Grilled Cheese &...
Read moreWhat an awesome experience I had. I called ahead to verify what I had read on the reviews as far as offering GF and having separate cooking/prep area. The girl that I spoke with confirmed what I had read and explained their cross contamination procedures (separate grill and utensils). I felt very comfortable making the trip down after speaking to the staff. They are able to prepare several items - crabcake, grilled cheese and mac n cheese. I was able to get their signature "Guy Fieri" crabcake melt. It was delicious. In the 1.5 years since I've been diagnosed, it was one of the best meals I've had and I ate it with confidence. Our waitress was the same person I had spoken with and she was totally on top of things and knew all about proper procudeures. She told me that they have been working on perfecting their GF offerings and after much trial and error, they now feel they have a product(s) that people can actually enjoy and she was right! Kudos to the owners and the staff that have taken the time to learn and do GF/Celiac-Friendly right. Icing on the cake - the bread didn't fall apart and was actually very good! I'm not sure about anyone else but it is such a pleasure to eat somewhere where your are not made to feel like a pain/annoyance/diva because...
Read moreDid you know they were on a show? The moment you walk in and look at the menu, they will remind you. I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich and soups to go. I will just say it was slow. It took awhile, I would understand if it was a full house and they were drowning in the kitchen from the multitude of orders, but it wasn't. Maybe they had a large order for delivery, maybe they were making my soup from scratch, maybe they're grilled cheese perfectionists, I don't know, it just felt unusually long for a grilled cheese. While I waited, they had flatscreens with that food show on, the one with the spikey bleached hair guy who looks like he belongs in smash mouth. While I waited, I pondered if they have some kind of agreement with smash mouth doppelganger to promote his show so heavily. Well my food came out and I wouldn't call this place destination worthy. I'm sure their DDD approved sandwiches are spectacular and would be worthy of going out of your way for. I just wanted a humble grilled cheese and I think it fell short, especially with all the hype built up and it's also the first part of their business name. By the way, this place was on a food show, in case you...
