Double Dyme Tavern — Restaurant in South Amboy

We were told about the Taco Tuesday deal at this bar and happened to be near it at about noon. So we stopped in for lunch, but it was obvious that they do more food sales for dinner. Many items weren't prepared for the day yet and the cook came out to speak to us about each item he wound up missing. He seemed defeated by his third visit, but he was so forthcoming with any hiccups in the kitchen. Even though I'm sure it was uncomfortable and defeating, he still was transparent so that he wouldn't blindside us. That being said, the food we had was very good. We started with the hot wings that had very good flavor. They didn't give us celery (or carrots...), but I assumed that he didn't have any. My husband ordered a burger that he was very pleased with. It was very juicy and obviously was NOT just a frozen patty that they threw on the grill. It was missing the main specialty item that the burger (believe it was chili), but he liked it none the less. I had ordered the taco trio special which is normally served with one each one chicken, steak and shrimp. Being allergic to shrimp, they replaced it with steak without a hassle or upcharge. However, they might not have charged due to missing so many items we wanted. I enjoyed them very much. The steak was my favorite and he cooked it to a perfect MR for me. We loved the atmosphere and I loved the women's room neon sign. I will post the picture. I decided that I will wait until we give them another chance before I post any pics. We decided that we should try again very soon, mainly because of the staff working daytime on Tues 8/13. Each of them made us feel welcome and were genuinely nice people. So much so that we didn't even care that our food was missing items. So I must say when I first walked in, I questioned whether or not I should stay... I’m glad I did! The bartender, Martina, was warm, inviting and instantly made me feel like a regular, and although I can only attest to the wings, which happened to be a special, since I was there on a Wednesday, my experience food wise was incredible. I have a unique concoction and a very specific style of preparation that they nailed to a “T.” (something few places do). I travel for work all throughout New Jersey and have stopped at countless places to try their buffalo wings and of course a beer or two. This restaurant and bar is without a doubt up there in the top five of the greatest wings I’ve ever had! My recommendation is to order them extra well done and my personal preference is to mix both the buffalo and garlic Parmesan sauces together. If you ever have Martina, she will treat you instantly as a regular and please don’t forget to take care of her or any of the staff there. I will surely bring me back here every time I’m in town. This place is an absolute gem. The interior is cozy and well designed. We were greeted by the bartender IMMEDIATELY upon entering, and within about 3 minutes we had water and beers on our table. I absolutely love that level of service.

Appetizers ordered- lemon pepper wings, which were out of this world. Perfectly seasoned, and crispy. They are using next level ingredients and it shows. They’re not pawning off frozen junk like some of the other places nearby.

Chicken quesadilla - again, had the taste of a homemade dish. The chicken was freshly made and marinated, super tender.

Beef empanadas- didn’t disappoint either. Well fried, and the beef filling was legit.

For entrees, two of us got burgers, and they came cooked to order, which again is such a small detail that too many places can’t get right. These guys nailed it. My burger came perfectly medium, and was excellent.

I can’t say enough about how outstanding our first experience was here. The service is top notch. The place is clean and cozy. And the food was exceptional as well. We live a block away, and will be back....
