Cakes By the Sea — Restaurant in South Carolina

I ordered a cake for my wife's 70th birthday and chose Cakes by the Sea because of the reviews and the quality of their website. I attempted to call the store on a day they showed as open, but there was no answer. I used a link to send an email and a couple of days later I received an email response that stated they were closed for vacation and would not be open for a couple more weeks. In my opinion, this information should have been posted on their website so that customers are aware. I wanted to order a specialized cake for this occasion so I was happy to wait since I did not need it for some time. I went to the store and ordered the cake a couple of weeks before the pickup. The woman who assisted me was friendly and assisted me with choosing the cake and the specific decorations that would be added. Because this was a surprise I was not able to pick the cake up the day of the party and had arranged for a friend go to pick it up. When I placed the order there were a couple of specific things that I requested to be done. Many who read this will say that this may be a bit nit picky but the sea grass piping on the side of the cake was to be done in a brown icing and was done in white. They also were to add additional white chocolate sea horses, which they did. That being said, the cake was truly a hit with my wife and all those who attended the party. The chocolate cake was moist and delicious and the peanut butter butter cream was also very good. overall I was pleased with the cake with the exception of the seagrass color, which would have given the sides of the cake a little more texture visually. The 4 stars is given because the cake was not completed exactly as ordered and for a higher end cake it should have been correct. The other reason is due to the website not reflecting the lengthy closing for vacation. I have contacted the store and discussed for informational purposes the missed sea grass color and they appreciated the information. I would absolutely recommend this bakery as a place to have a cake ordered and will order from here myself again...

Terrible Service. I spoke with kris a month back about a wedding cake design that I wanted. She had told me she could do the cake but in buttercream which was perfect for me since I hate fondant. I was told that I could stop by anytime without an appointment to decide on cake flavors, etc. Well, today I called ahead to let them know I was coming. I get to the bakery and was met by a teenage girl who seemed oblivious to the world around her. When I told her about my event she could not find me in the book and my event date was not scheduled. So, she was told to go ahead and write me up. So we started to complete the form with the information given to me by kris from my email with her. Until she saw the picture of the cake I wanted. The girl calls Kris (who I am assuming was Kris since she never introduced herself) to look at the picture. Kris beings to laugh and say "oh that gold stuff again". The woman barely spoke to me, more so about me to the girl about the cake and why she did not like the gold designs and how they do not have the stuff to make the cake and went back to the back without another word to me. I stood there with the girl staring at me I asked if she was coming back and she said ummmmmm..... no I think she went back to work. Long story short the girl told me they could not do the cake that I was told they could do. Also, she nor the baker gave any other alternative ideas for the cake or even cared to take the time to speak with me about the cake or apologize for saying they could do the cake but they actually couldn't. I finally told the girl I was going somewhere else that could help me and walked out. I was so disappointed and frustrated. Poor...

This was the second place we tried samples from for our wedding and the samples were so good, we booked it right away! We ordered a tier of strawberry with cream cheese filling and a tier that was yellow with orange creamsicle icing along with chocolate and vanilla cupcakes. So first, the cake/cupcakes….everyone loved it SO much, we had maybe 1 cupcake left(because I hid it on our table!😂 don’t judge, I didn’t get a lot of time to stop and eat lol). I can’t express enough how good these cakes are, just try the samples seriously! And make sure you get the seashells and starfish because they taste really really good! Next, the workers. The people that work here are SO awesome and just absolutely the sweetest. I cannot thank them enough for how great they were to us and my girls. I love this place so much and I WILL make the hour trip from home for my girls...
