I drove by the Mekong hundreds of times fleetingly considering dining there each time before stopping in the first time. Before that first time I drove through the parking lot, circling through the drive-through lane that was part of the old Arby's. The Mekong has a garden directly outside the building's backdoor which shows a serious interest on some level of having fresh herbs, despite it's total lack of regard for aesthetics. My first thought was that easily influenced diners could be pushed away by the plastic buckets used as growing pots and the unconcern for appearances made obvious by many small trays of plants placed on the concrete ground inside the perimeter of the drive through lane. Please understand that I like the utilitarian use of this space and the authenticity of purpose it communicates to me. But, restaurant management should definitely consider improving the appearance of this garden space. It would be so easy to improve, and by doing so they'd remove an excuse some might have for not venturing in to dine here the first time. My suggestion is a selfish one. I want this place to prosper and be here for me to enjoy for a long time. Greenville needs more great places to eat like this. Greenville has multiple good steak houses, sushi bars, Mexican restaurants, BBQ joints, etc, etc. etc. Greenville has a fair variety for a town of it's size, but more choices, more variety is always a plus. The Mekong appears to be the only good Vietnamese restaurant. The food here is excellent. My wife is vegan. She enjoys vegan pho (not on the menu so you'd have to ask for it) and summer rolls with fried Tofu. She loves it. We enjoy hot green tea. Very pleasant. I have enjoyed beef pho and steamed duck bun with braised duck and a variety of veggies. The duck is very tasty. and the soup broth is awesome. Good portion sizes, which is always important to me because I enjoy eating! Service is great. Staff are friendly, frequently checking with us to see if we needed anything. Comfortable and casual inside. The place was busy and staff appeared to be experienced handling a full house. Dining here is fun and very much...
Read moreLooked up a place to eat after visiting Rainbow Falls and found this gem. The outside is nothing to look at but seeing the fresh herbs being grown out back were an instant sign we were in for something quite amazing.
Our waiter; Austin, was fantastic. He was attentive, engaging and friendly.
We ordered the Pork and Shrimp Summer Rolls and Chicken Curry Soup for apps. They were delicious. The mint in the rolls was exceptionally fresh, really brought it together. The flavors on the curry was deep. Very comforting.
Got Bahn Mi and it had the perfect crunch you need from the French bread. Also got the pho, the broth was magical.
Decided to be adventurous and try the Durian Fruit Ice Cream. I'm still trying to figure out of i liked it. Nothing against the preparation, just a strange tasting fruit.
Overall everything was delicious. Living in a smaller town in the Midlands it's such a treat to find such a delicious restaurant with deep flavors and...
Read moreFirst time eating here (middle afternoon visit). We got take out. While the service was quick and staff very friendly, there were obvious cleanlines issues in the resturant and food was questionable at best
I ordered pulled pork vermicelli. The pork had a noticeably funky smell to it and at first I wrote it off as being related to the spice preparation. My wife tried it as well and noted how it was definitely old, past shelf life food. The chicken lemongrass vermicelli she ordered also tasty old. The lettuce in our sides also was mushy and old. This is unfortunate as the the herbs and other veggies were fresh.
Furthermore the garden out back in containers was not fenced in and there were cats seen walking through the parkinglot. This poses a health risk.
Thinking back we did not see a DHEC health inspection rating ready visible. Read through other reviews, this place may have tasry good but should practice better food hygiene.
Will not...
