Pelican's SnoBalls — Restaurant in South Carolina

Normally a positive experience, if slow at times. What is so time consuming about ice and syrup in a cup? I remain confused. Anyway, today was different. Had more people working than I’ve ever seen before and yet it was slower than ever. The person taking orders needed me to repeat each of three items multiple times while she ran back to set out bottles. After they disappeared for quite some time another young lady came up and set the three cups out then immediately, rattled off the 3 items the turned away as I tried to get her attention that one of the orders was wrong, missing an add-in. She huffed and disappeared then came back and just shoved a small cup of nerds out the window and ran away again before I could process what had happened. I then saw her carrying boxes in from a trailer as we were leaving. Clearly that work was a higher priority than the paying customers out front and in the drive thru that hadn’t moved since we arrived. Bad day? Probably. Can they do...

I am greatly pleased to report that the report of Pelican's SnoBalls has been greatly exaggerated. With the recent loss of its Michelin Star and, of course, the much sensationalized "Ice Shaving Scandal" in the industry as a whole, I had feared that Pelican's would mail it in at this point. To my tremendous joy, I found otherwise. My "Dill Pickle" flavored SnoBall was so visually appealing as to bring a tear to the eye, and the taste, ah, the taste. Not much on the nose, but on the palate, a early sour note with a hint of herbaceousness, an incongruous slightly sweet finish, and effectively no tanin or lingering astringency. It makes me so happy that I can get real New Orleans snowballs here in Columbia and that a business started by some New Orleans transplants has taken off so well!

They offer a good selection of flavors that would be at home in any New Orleans snowball stand (I grew up there) and have some unique combinations with names sure to attract kids. They have toppings that range from the more traditional condensed milk (my favorite) to Nerds and gummy candy. Service is always friendly and fast and there is a nice, clean outdoor seating area as well. It's going to be a hot summer so I suggest you take a cue from my old home and cool off...
