River City Cafe — Restaurant in South Carolina

This was our 4th vacation to MB in the last 10 years. I've always heard that River City Cafe is highly recommended, so we decided to give it a try this time. We'll NEVER eat here again.

Our experience started very well and we had no complaints.... until the food arrived.

When the food arrived, 2/4 burgers were wrong. This was immediately mentioned to the waitress, Hannah. She apologized, said she'd get it taken care of, and walked away. Mistakes happen and there were no hard feelings at this point.

Since she left the plates of food at the table, the two people with incorrect burgers began to eat their fries while waiting for new burgers. After 5-ish minutes, Hannah returned and took the two plates away, including the fries that were being eaten. Hannah then returned after a few more minutes with two plates of food - the same plates she had taken away. We quickly seen that all they did when she took the plates away was to scrape off the toppings that weren't supposed to be on the burger. And, they didn't even serve them fresh fries - the burgers with toppings scraped off were served with the same fries that were now cold as they were originally served almost 10 minutes ago.

After taking a bite, my husband decided he wasn't going to eat his food. It was quite some time before Hannah even returned to check on us. We asked for his meal to be removed from the bill. We told Hannah that the toppings were simply scraped off, and not remade, and while her words made it seem like she cared, her actions didn't.

It was awhile longer before Hannah returned with our bill. There was no receipt upon payment, which I didn't like as you're unable to see what you're paying for. Also, you pay on a handheld device. While paying, Hannah just stood there, which felt uncomfortable as I'm trying to calculate how much tip to give her. The "quick tip" options were 25%, 20%, and 18%. Imo, she didn't deserve any of those. However, with the stress from the meal and her just standing there watching me, I just quickly pressed the 18% so we could leave.

Overall, we paid $86 for 4 people (including tip) and it felt like an entire waste of money. Even the two of us who had our burgers made correctly didn't enjoy our food - the burger...

I've been to River City Cafe in Surfside before and loved it. This location was busy today. The service was so slow. We had to wait about 20 minutes to be seated. Once we were seated somebody came over and took our orders for drinks. We waited about another 20 minutes before our drinks came and we even met our waitress. At which time we place an order for our appetizer and one of our children's meals. After about 10 minutes we placed our order for our meals. Waited at least an hour for our food to come out. But our food wasn't brought out until a manager asked us if she could get us anything and I sarcastically said our food. She goes I will go get it for you right now. She went in the back came out with all our food like it had been sitting there waiting. The food was okay but not for the price. My burger was very dry. Also if you have children bring your own seat belts for the high chairs. Not one high chair there had a seatbelt that worked. So I had to try to eat my food with my one and a half year old climbing on me while trying to hold my 8-month-old down in a high chair without a seat belt. What a fun place to eat! I loved the atmosphere here! This is a back to here’s your peanuts throw your shells on the floor if you like kinda place. So just be aware. There was a variety of American style food that was sure to please the family. A huge and unique flavor of hamburgers along with so many other sandwiches choices! Sides such as sweet potato fries, coleslaw, fries along with others. The prices were very reasonable here as well averaging $10-$20 per adult. If you have little ones that sit in a high chair they are available and there is a kids menu. The table has a brown paper table cover which is nice for everyone to color on if they so choose. (See a fun place! 😊) The service…. Well that went very well too very polite, cheerful, helpful and she was on top of anything else we may have needed as well. Me being me of course, since the cups were able to be taken home, I did that just for fun too. Oh one final note about this place…. There is a drawbridge just outside that I thought was really cool, but apparently it has a tendency to back up the traffic for about 15 minutes or so.
