Happy hour food tips!! A thorough review of many of the happy hour food items.
First, these are great food specials! We love going to the happy hour food specials now that we are empty-nesters and spending more time at the beach. And so I have compiled a list of a dozen or more happy hour special places and we have been trying them all! Up and down the grand strand!
Here is why the claw House stands out. Quite a few of the restaurants with happy hour specials do not give that large of a discount. They may be a dollar off here and there, but this one really packs a punch. In addition to wonderful happy hour drinks, below are the following happy hour specials that we tried. We ate so many of the smaller, happy hour items, that we really did not need dinner. The overall bill was very affordable, and we received a great variety of food. Below, I am ranking the food items in order from best flavor and best bargain to worst. I’m also including some things you should avoid. This list was compiled over quite a few visits.
The standout deal is the oysters. Buck fifty each. These are the nice big juicy variety oysters that we all know and love in the Lowcountry. The price point is excellent at $1.5 and includes mignonette sauce, cocktail sauce, lemon & crackers
Our second favorite item was the pig wing. This sounds odd, but it is huge. A lot of meat on that bone! It has a little bit of buffalo sauce, but not too spicy. At $10 bucks, it’s actually a lot of food. And you get more than one. This would make a perfect portion for lunch.
Fish fry bites at $10 and Crab cake poppers at $12! These were both such fun. It felt like the fish was a better deal at $10, not just because it’s cheaper, but because it’s a nice generous portion. A plate of either of these and some oysters and you’ve got a full meal!
Surf and turf skewers at $11 (not a really good deal, but it was a good food, although it wasn’t a ton of food, the flavors were wonderful). The tenderloin was cooked really nicely!
Menu items to avoid.
The mussels really tasted funny. I love mussels, but the combination that they had was not excellent, and I was a little underwhelmed with the flavor.
The calamari was a bit chewy and the flavor was just...

Drink order was promptly taken and told that the biscuits would be right out. First the prices are a bit higher than what we expected. $9.00 for 6 little neck clams and $25 for a Lobster Roll and 2 sides made us question our choice. We ended up ordering Clam Chowder and Lobster Bisque, Chowder was the better of the 2 with the Bisque being an over priced pasty thick mess with perhaps 2-3 pieces of what might have been Lobster. I ordered the Grilled Platter $31.00 with corn on the cob and rice pelif side, rice was just brown rice and the presentation uninspired. Bill ordered the Baked Shrimp $24.00 with crab stuffing, fries and coleslaw. Shrimp came out burnt and what little stuffing was all bread and little lobster sauce. Our other guest ordered the Linguine Parmesan with Blackened Shrimp $23.00. When it arrived it looked like pasta in white soup. The pasta was so soft it was like mashed pasta potatoes...it was so bad we sent it back. Crab Nachos $16.00 were a big stack of greasy chips with a drizzle of crab, cheese and stuff. Strawberry Fields Salad with Shrimp $18.00 was the best of all 5 meals. We asked about the biscuits...they were coming. Our guests were not pleased with the food nor the service as when the dinners were being delivered Bill had to call the fellow over as he had no idea what table the food was going to. We decided against desert and asked for the check...it came along with the biscuits. Questionable food and bad service by the kitchen lead to this 2 🌟 review as our server Brandi was doing her best to service a lot of tables. When you spend almost $200 with tip for a dinner experience you expect better. We suggest that they hire someone to view the food as it leaves the kitchen as it would prevent issues like the ones we experienced and don't think we...
Read moreUPDATE - We were in the area, and thought we’d give them a second chance. Once again, food is no better than mediocre. The muscles were pretty bland, with a very watery broth. The poke tacos were just OK. The lobster salad was good, but was a very small serving. Other than the location, which is great, i’d have to say they’re just mediocre.
ORIGINAL REVIEW: The positive: Great location. Prime inlet water views. Our waitress, Brandi, was excellent. The not so positive: We chose to sit on the lower deck to enjoy the ambience. We were taken to our table where, when my husband pulled his chair out, the seat had dried bird droppings on it. For a restaurant who claims to disinfect in-between customers, not sure how that got overlooked. Drinks were ordered consisting of a white claw, and a frozen margarita.
For dinner we started with 2 Caesar salads, which were ample in size (big enough to share). We asked that they be lightly dressed, but still they came pretty much drowning in dressing. That’s not to say the dressing wasn’t good. It was. But way too much. Also, it appears they use packaged croutons, which takes away from a great Caesar salad. Entrees came out before we were even ½ way finished with our salads. Not good.
For entrées, my husband had the crab cakes, which were good, but not great. I had the snow crab legs, which were served on the cold side suggesting they sat out too long. The corn on the cob was a full cob, but overcooked and not worth eating. They forgot what I assumed should be drawn butter, but when reminded brought melted butter. There is a difference.
Our dinner totaled $150. For the price, they definitely should’ve...
