We had heard of Cheryl Laws and the good work she and her team are doing in helping reintegrate rehabilitated women with addictions by providing a place to learn new skills, gain confidence and build new lives for themselves. On our visit to Charleston, WV, we stopped by to see for ourselves.
We didn't know what to expect when we walked into Cafe Appalachia for lunch but we were very pleasantly surprised to find a lovely cafe restaurant set up in an old church. Mismatching sets of tables and chairs filled the room, immediately making you feel at home. A cheery and friendly greeting from the ladies behind the counter made you feel welcome and they invited us to come in, and come on up to the counter, which we did. Lunch is a set menu daily and you have the option of choosing a large plate ($10) and a small plate ($8). My husband and I chose a large for him and a small for me and we were both more than satisfied.
Lunch consisted of a fresh, crisp spinach salad with goat cheese, tomatoes and a balsamic drizzle. Our meal was a different and delicious Bavarian sausage and apple hash, tasty potato corn chowder and fresh fruit. Everything was fresh and plentiful. And friendly Amber behind the counter made a delicious decaffeinated mocha coffee upon my request that was a great way to finish up our meal.
The facility was immaculate and everyone was friendly, smiling and welcoming. I would definitely recommend visiting Cafe Appalachia for a nice lunch (or breakfast) the next time you're in town. "Serving a greater purpose with every meal" or as I like to think of it, eating good while doing good. I wish Cheryl, Holly and their team...
Read moreWhen Cafe Appalachia first opened I wanted to try them but never got around to it. Today we finally did! I absolutely love the atmosphere. The inside seating was very relaxed and comfortable, and the outside seating was shaded, comfortable, and very clean. I tried the Oh My Cluckin Goodness which is a basil pesto chicken with roasted red pepper sauce and my other half tried The Local. I don't like tomatoes or onions so we got those on the side and shared meals. I love that the veggies are grown right on site! Everything tasted very fresh. For me, my chicken sandwich was delicious! Next time I'll request an extra side of the roasted red pepper sauce to dip my sandwich in. The local didn't come with any sauce so we requested mayo. I personally prefer my beef patties to be seasoned so I found the burger to be a little bland, but still good. I think I'd request a side of the roasted red pepper sauce to dip it in as well 🤣. The portions were perfect . We left full, but not overly full. I loved being able to eat outside in the breeze with the local birds. We saw a cardinal and a robin perch nearby while eating. I love animals, so this was a plus for me.We'll definitely be back, probably to try breakfast...
Read moreFirst time here and on my list of places to check out. My wife and I were there for breakfast. Being a former church the cafe is very cool and hip. I liked the different kinds and styles of tables and chairs in the "sanctuary". Not your ordinary breakfast diner fare, they have tried to put a unique twist on the menu items. I had the biscuits and gravy. The eggs and sausage were two separate sides. Everything was good, the only problem being that the sausage was one small piece for $3.49 making it $65 or $70 a pound since the piece was a little under an ounce. That's some pretty expensive sausage... even for fresh locally raised pork. Also some local jams and/or jellies would have been a nice touch for the biscuit but they had none. My wife had the waffles. She said they were frozen and nuked but I couldn't swear to that. The outside garden area was very nice and would have been a great place to dine but 8:30 in the morning in mid April is a little too chilly. I plan to come back for lunch sometime on a warm afternoon so the garden area can be appreciated. Be aware that they...
