If you are looking for quantity, big ol' bento boxes, or nose burning wasabi, move on...this is not the place. However, if you want a slightly more refined Japanese experience with a menu featuring mostly grilled plates, rolls, or sashimi/nigiri combos then this is definitely a decent choice.
We began our meal with a grilled hamachi collar on a salt block. The fish was grilled to a beautiful golden brown and tasted amazing! It was sweet, yet meaty and the salt added just the right oomph in flavor. Don't be afraid to dig in and pick the fish apart, there are huge pockets of meat that can be easily missed if you try to eat this politely.
Next came the cedar wagyu and albacore belly sashimi. The wagyu was seriously good! It's served with thinly sliced asparagus and a delicious mushroom topping. There's also no mistaking the wagyu - it was melt in your mouth tender and imbued with a delicious woody flavor from the cedar plank. The mushrooms also added a nice earthy flavor and the asparagus added a little crunch just for texture. The sashimi, on the other hand, was a little skimpy in my opinion. Fish is sliced pretty thin but was fresh and not at all fishy. It was $15 for 6 pieces of albacore. The fresh wasabi was also a nice touch, adding a subtle flavor that doesn't run through your sinuses like fire. People definitely aren't used to this - the table next to us asked if they had the powder "more spicy" wasabi instead.
"Finally" came our rolls - the dragon ball and red lips. The dragon ball didn't have as much pizzazz as I had hoped, but it was still pretty good - similar to a spider roll you could say. The red lips also didn't have a wow factor but was definitely more unique. I really liked the grilled lemons, fried minced garlic, and saffron as garnishes. It added notes of citrus, florals, and just a hint of spice.
At this point, my family assessed how we were feeling and given how small the dishes were, we added an additional 3 plates...opting for choices that we felt would be heavier and more filling.
Joke's on us there. Our last 3 dishes were so-so at best.
The tonkatsu curry was sad. The tonkatsu was bone dry but the curry was fairly decent. I did like that they used Japanese rice though. We also ordered 2 cheaper rolls - the Hawaiian and the Rock n Roll. Both looked like they've seen better days. Despite being at least 8 pieces of more, both rolls from this category just felt skimpy.
Overall, I'd peg Kamu at 3 to 3.5 stars, but our server was very nice and prompt. She not only provided some choice recommendations to us but also made sure our table was served timely and she kept our...
Read moreThis restaurant is small but feels very cozy. It is clean and staff here is pretty attentive. Ordered an omakase for $67. It comes with appetizer, entree, chef selection nigiri, and dessert.
Appetizer - tomato salad and edamame. Tomato salad was much better then anticipated . Comes in a yuzu type dressing I think. Very refreshing, tangy, and flavorful. Edamame was pretty average but nice to have.
Entree- ceviche and chicken skewer. I won't really call these entrees, more like appetizers. I can't remember what kind of fish was used for the ceviche. Maybe hamachi? It was good. Kind of more like tataki. Chicken skewer was ok.
Sushi - omakase came with 15 pieces of nigiri and a small grilled lobster tail. Quality of the fish was above average . They come already seasoned/ with sauce so there is no need to use any soy sauce or wasabi unless you really want to. I was surprised at they gave 15 pieces! Well worth it for the price.
Dessert - green tea creme brulee. It was really small. You can finish it in 2 bites. I didn't mind that it was small considering the amount of food that I got and because it came with the omakase but I hope that it is much bigger when you order it off the menu. Not very sweet which is good in my perspective. The crust on top was not crispy though. Not sure if they needed to just burn it more or if they needed more sugar to make the crust but it was sad.... dessert was anticlimactic. Can't really expect a sushi restaurant to have amazing dessert.
Will I go back? Absolutely! There are so many things I want to try on their menu like uni soba and smoked sake. I think this is my new fave sushi restaurant đ. Hopefully every other experience will is as good as this. Price here is reasonable and the quality seems good.
Recommend getting a reservation. Place is so small it...
Read moreVery small space, If you would like to sit at a table as opposed to the bar, make a reservation! The food is excellent in every aspect. Presented absolutely beautiful and every bit is delicious as it looks! Some may find the prices on the higher end but I feel that they are competitive for San Francisco and well worth it for what you are getting! Service is friendly and prompt. We did not have a reservation and were able to get seated immediately at 6:00 p.m., busy as time for dinner. Sitting at the bar gives you a view of the sushi chef's at work and interacting with them was quite fun! Make sure that you check the board at the back of the restaurant to see what is fresh for that day. I got the ottoro premium fatty tuna sashimi which was served on a block of Himalayan pink salt. An incredible bit of food, the salt added just the perfect touch to the lightly grilled fish. It melted in my mouth! The dynamite roll, which was recommended to me by a family member, lived up to their rave reviews. The perfect bite, creamy / savory / spicy with a little pop from the tobiko sprinkled on top. Dessert was the crowning jewel of the entire dinner. I had the Sweet Boutique Bite: organic matcha green tea créme brulee served with organic Napa apricot jam topped beignets. The creme brulee was smooth and creamy with a very slight hint of sweet. The beignets were created with a puff pastry so they were crunchy on the outside but had a custard like filling inside. Topped with a small dollop of delicious apricot jam. The perfect end to a...
