Stopped in for lunch today. I ordered a lamb gyro, fries, a baklava roll, and galaktobouriko.
The gyro was fantastic. The lamb was seasoned well. The onions and tomatoes were fresh. The tzatziki sauce had a ton of flavor, and is probably the best I've ever had.
Oh, and the size of this gyro. It was crammed full and the pictures don't do it justice. It is huge compared to most gyros I've had in the past. Highly recommend the gyro.
The fries were the exact opposite. They were as bland as cardboard. I had to salt them myself as it seems there was no seasoning on them at all. And the portion size was really small. Stay away from the fries.
The galaktobouriko was tasty. Not overly sweet, but definitely counts as a dessert. I wouldn't order it again though, because...baklava roll.
The baklava roll was delicious. I am biased, as baklava is my favorite dessert. And I've never met a baklava I didn't enjoy. This was really good in comparison to a lot of other baklava I've had. It was simply oozing with honey, and I love that.
I ordered pickup, so I don't know about the service. However, my short experience there today leads me to not want to sit down to eat there. I stood at a counter for at least two minutes while three people behind the counter refused to even acknowledge my existence. Eventually a guy came out from the back to greet me and take my payment. You should at least greet people when they walk in when you are less than five feet away from them.
This could easily have been a five star experience. But the weird standoffish behavior of the people behind the counter and the bland as bland can be fries, dropped this rating down significantly.
Also, this lunch cost me a little over $17. Not bad at all.
Long story short, order a gyro with a side of baklava, (or two!), and pick it up to take home. That's the experience I would recommend.
Edit: Got lunch here a second time. Ordered their wings. They are solid. Definitely different, but I would absolutely...
Read moreI love Athens and stop in regularly. It's a really great expression of a family-run business. The staff is always very courteous and accommodating, although service can slow a bit during peak meal times. The gyros are a really good value for the money. Their "regular" gyro is huge and filling while their "large" is an absolute belly-buster. I love their Greek style spaghetti and the sauce is so good...sweet, bright, chunky, aromatic. The only reason I rated Athens a 4-star instead of 5 is that a few times the spaghetti noodles have been overcooked and are a bit of a letdown compared to the excellent sauce. I'm sure one could probably request them to be more al dente. They have a nice selection of Greek desserts as well. My personal favorite is the galaktobouriko. They serve a really respectable coffee, too. Prices are very reasonable and portions will not...
Read moreI use to love this place and could be guaranteed good food always. Today was a giant disappointment. We ordered a gyro and fries and my sister said it was very good. I ordered the spaghetti and it was horrible. It definitely is not like the last two times I ordered it. I got meatballs and they were tiny not big like before and didn't taste very good. The sauce tasted completely different than it has in the past. It was horrible. I don't know if they changed the recipe or if it was old ( hopefully the few bites I took doesn't make me sick) It was a complete disapointment. Last time we got pita this time normal french type bread. The salad that came with it and the bread was good. I don't know why the spaghetti was so gross but I threw it in the trash. Total...
