I've lived in Springfield since 2005 and this has been one of our go to restaurants for our family since we've lived here. That all ended tonight. As a long time customer of the Blue Roof I'm accustomed to waiting in the drive thru. As a matter of fact one of the neat characteristics of waiting in the drive thru was when the distinguished older gentleman, that I believe was the owner would come out to the drive thru and take everyone's order without writing anything down. He would stop by and get the orders of several cars and they were always correct.
Fast forward to the events of tonight. I pull into the drive thru with approximately 5-7 cars in front of me. An hour later I finally reach the window. A large sized gentleman who I believe is the husband of the owner's daughter took my order. I said to him, "Look man, I don't want to be that guy that you remember tonight as being that jerk customer but I just wanted to let you know I've been coming here for years but I've never had to wait an hour in the drive thru."
He replied, "We're really busy. You can always come inside or call ahead." Yes, he's correct I could have done that. I guess I could have done that for the last 14 years but previously I never had to do that. Also, note, he didn't say "I'm sorry sir." He put the delay back on my choice for choosing the drive thru option.
So, I've placed my order, given my feedback about the long delay and then waited another 20 minutes to receive 2 entrees an egg roll and some soup. The gentleman hands out my food and can see I wanted to say something else but shuts the sliding door and walks away from the window.
I stay parked at the window and the man's wife, the owner's daughter, can see I wanted to say something so she opens up the window. I say to her in a moderate low volume tone, " I've been a long time customer of yours and I have always had good service but I just wanted to let you know this is the worst experience I have ever had here. I waited an hour in the drive thru line and then waited another 20 minutes to get my food."
This was her response, "WE'RE BUSY!!!! WHAT DO YOU WANT US TO DO?! IT'S NOT LIKE WE'RE IN THERE TWIDDLING OUR THUMBS!!!" And then she slammed the door shut. The all caps were used because she was shouting this at me. Yes, I paid $21 dollars to be yelled at for giving feedback for having to wait a long time.
I don't know what has happened to th older gentleman who used to take orders in the drive thru. I hope he is okay. But if this young lady and that gentleman are in fact his daughter and his son in law they dishonor that gentleman with their conduct. That gentleman spent a lifetime building up this business and his daughter and her husband are going to destroy what they built if they continue to treat long time customers this way.
Look, I realize I could have called ahead or gone inside. Maybe it would have been quicker. I guess I'll never know. However, as I waited in the drive thru I noticed the delivery service the Blue Roof has partnered with had drivers continually going in to pick up orders. Yes, on the evening of 2/8/19 the Blue Roof was busy inside, busy at their drive thru and busy fulfilling delivery orders. How do you respond to that? You staff accordingly or you shut down your drive thru. If you have a drive thru at a restaurant there's an assumption from the consumer that you get more than 5 cars through per hour.
I have no idea what impact my review will have. I'm just a guy that has marred into a Springfield family and I've only been here for 14 years. The thing is my wife's family has been in Robertson County since 1812. Yes, 1812. I can tell you right now. I'll never go back to the Blue Roof nor will my family. Springfield for example has several Mexican dining options, As Springfield continues to grow there's a market for another Chinese option. I'm eager to consider that option because the 2nd generation of the Blue Roof has failed and dishonored its heritage. I've already paid $21 to get yelled at. They'll never see another cent...
Read moreI have A LOT to say about this place! I ordered the cashew chicken and unfortunately my meal came out with badly scorched sauce that I could not eat... it was really bad! My whole plate was still full of food, they could clearly see I wasn't just trying to get a free meal or something... I never complain unless it's REALLY bad! It tasted like they just had some things they wanted to get rid of so they added these mini cube cuts of freezer burnt, frozen chopped carrots and peas along with chopped chunks of baby corn. The wonton soup was good, (a lil salty), but all their bowls and dishes need replaced BAD and are discolored and BADLY chipped. When we brought it to the older owner ladies attention about the scorched sauce she didn't even let us finish trying to explain, she threw her hands in the air and started telling my whole family off, IN FRONT OF OTHER CUSTOMERS AS WELL! I told her she was being very unprofessional and she said she didn't care and that we were lying, I told her I would never be back in there and she said good and that she didn't care and told me to leave and not come back... she did not charge us for my meal but went totally irate for the remainder of the time we had to be there! Sad thing is is that the few customers that were there they all just acted like this was a normal thing and just ignored it all... I was totally shocked! Also when we first got our appetizer soup my family and I were trying to relax and enjoy our time together, the owner and their family held a HUGE SUPER LOUD conversation in English and chinese and they were arguing and just totally uncaring for their customers at all!
They also use some of the tables and booths for storage and have boxes and piles of junk everywhere! This place needs to be inspected like yesterday!!
In response to some other reviews I just read, I agree about the rice tasting like they overcooked it in the microwave,...
Read moreMy wife and I love Chinese food and decided to try this restaurant last night. I was very disappointed. We ordered the beef lo mein, shrimp fried rice and a side order of fried wontons. I have so much to say that I've reserved a whole paragraph for each order.
The beef lo mein was the best thing we had. I say this with regret because at best it was tasteless and greasy. Most beef lo mein dishes have a salty taste with some spice and a little bit of sweetness from the noodles. Besides a slight difference in texture between the beef and the noodles, the only thing I could taste was grease.
Shrimp fried rice is a hard dish to get wrong. I've never had terrible shrimp fried rice from any establishment until now. The rice was dry and bland. I've had better fried rice from a frozen meal. Actually, I've had much better fried rice from frozen meals. Speaking of frozen, the shrimp were clearly frozen for far too long and cooked completely wrong. The shrimp were mushy and completely tasteless. It was like I put a soggy piece of bread in my mouth mixed with rice.
The wontons should be re-marketed at chips. They were so hard that I had to break them apart by hand into small pieces just to eat them. That's pretty bad considering I love the texture of beef jerky. I had to take them away from my son because I was worried he would puncture the roof of his mouth. Inside was wrapped a single piece of unidentifiable meat roughly half the size of the last knuckle of my pinky finger and that was it.
If you're in Springfield and looking for Chinese, find a different restaurant or save your money and grab a frozen meal from Kroger. It will be far more satisfying than anything you...
