Literary buffs, this is the sister cafe to the Protagonist Cafe in Soulard, so set your expectations high. They specialize in fresh roast, small batch coffee, fresh baked sweets and savory pastry. The charm comes from the location; it's housed in the beautiful art deco building that served as the Third District’s police station (1927 - 1990). Place your order at the booking desk. The cells remain intact, bars and all, to provide an incarcerating coffee experience... so good it's criminal. As a final touch, the rear section now houses the Pieces: Board Game Bar and Restaurant.

Antagonist is such a cool spot. It’s in this amazing old building that was originally a police station, and later an art gallery — now it’s a coffee shop with serious character. The vibe is relaxed but stylish, and the coffee is excellent. It’s roasted right there on site, and you can actually see the roaster in action. Served in real mugs with real spoons — no paper or plastic, which I loved. I had a scone too, and it was fresh and delicious. The staff were super friendly, and we found street parking right out front. Definitely a place I’d come back to.

I love this place. Two women walked in in front of us. They must be regulars. They knew the orders, and had their cups hanging on the wall. It must be in an old jail. They have jail cells (3) that are set up as discussion/ conference rooms. We ended up seated in a very cool dead end that was nicely furnished and very quiet. This is seriously amazing coffee. I had the mocha latte. It was supple, rich and luxurious. The also offer cortados and a Wide range of other offerings. It also looks like they roast their own coffee. This is a must return place.

100%, A+++, 5 stars, please please please come on down and check this place out! It's so unique! The staff is friendly, and the atmosphere is just so darn cool. I love coming here to work! The way that they transformed the jail cells into something so fun and artistic is just so creative, this place has a lot of personality.

The coffee is also served in these cute little mugs if you dine in, which I haven't experienced anywhere else. The mugs are funny, and I've never had a repeat. My last one said "World's best grandma"

Also the barista Violet is just so darn nice, it'd be impossible to not feel welcome by her and the rest of their crew! She smiles at everyone, and is just so gosh darn friendly. Last time I was here I spilled my coffee over everything in sight, and she didn't hesitate before leaping into action and cleaning up the mess and offering me a new drink - all while being very happy and nice!

I'll definitely be back, and I hope you all pay a visit, this place...

Fun vibes! Probably won’t return though. At most coffee shops the tea/lemonade/Italian sodas are usually less expensive than espresso drinks but here an Italian soda, iced tea, and cinnamon roll ended up costing a little more than I would spend on flavored lattés + a pastry somewhere else. To be fair, the iced tea was one of the pride specials - I was expecting it to be a little spendier for that reason but was still shocked. My partner’s Italian soda was pretty bad; they only put a teeny drop of syrup in it. A La Croix has more flavor! Cinnamon roll was great and the decor and themes were fun but there are much better...

Wow! What a beautiful place! The owners have turned this into such a great little spot for coffee and baked goods. All of the baked goods are amazing as well! The baker they have working for them is stellar and everything is delicious! Coffee was great. Ben, the GM, was super friendly and approachable. I cannot wait to see what Pieces looks like when they open it over there in a few weeks! They roast their own coffee in house and have an amazing full menu of pastries and delicious coffee drinks. The vibes are immaculate, decor is not overwhelming, but cozy and...
