I love this store. The folks who run it are so friendly. For example, one time, I was planning to make my Mom chile relleno - her favorite Mexican dish - so, I went to Dierbergs and got most of the ingredients - including the poblano peppers, which at Dierbergs, the quality seemed….meh.
I didn’t like the cheese options at the big store, so I went to El Potro to try to find oaxaca cheese. They had that and also, they had the most beautiful, plump, green and fragrant poblano peppers.
The owner was in the vicinity of the cooler when he heard me talking to myself and expressing regret that I had already purchased eight poblano peppers at Dierbergs. I was seriously debating just pitching them and buying his. He came over and told me to go get mine and trade them out for some of his - no charge.
I. Was. Stunned. Who does that in this day and age? Allows a person to trade their lower quality item for something better at no cost? I would have paid!!
Anyway - I love this little gem of a market. They’re in my neighborhood - so I definitely make it a point to shop there for basic groceries and Mexican specialties, whenever the...
Read moreAUTHENTIC Mexican and Central American Cuisine! We really enjoyed eating at El Potro. I tend to judge a Mexican place by the chips and salsa they serve you when you sit down and the salsa and chips here did NOT disappoint. The salsa was fresh made and chips had great flavor. We started with Margaritas and Mojitos which were delicious. They have many drink options and the Mexcal Margarita had a lovely smokey flavor to it. They have an extensive menu of authentic dishes and between three of us we sampled the Fajitas Mix, Camaron a La Diabla (Shrimp in Spicy Red Sauce) and Tacos (Chicken, Carne Asada and their Special Campechana (mix of a variety of proteins). We finished with the Churros which came with a side of Strawberry Ice Cream. The churros were warm and crispy. The service was wonderful. Looking forward to going back. There is also a Mercado attached to the restaurant that was closed by the time we arrived for dinner but looks like it had lots of authentic food items...
Read moreI had high hopes from the high reviews, but unfortunately the reviews are wrong. It was all around bad. See below. I ordered a burrito to go and the person who answered the phone did not speak English and had no idea what I was trying to order. He just kept repeating himself. It was a simple steak burrito. I asked him what came with it and he said rice and beans and a salad and topped with cheese sauce. When I got home, it had no cheese sauce on top, not even 2 tbsp of rice and not even that much of beans, and the salad was a few shreds of lettuce. I had also asked for sour cream and they gave me a teaspoon of it on top. The burrito was small and dry. It is very obvious that this is a place where they barely give any quanity of food for a higher price. I paid 17 dollars for my order and didn't get what I was told, especially for quantity. To mention, it did come with chips and salsa, but the salsa was so incredibly hot that I could not even breathe attempting to eat it. I do not plan...
