Yum! Finally gave it a try (I usually try too late or forget about it because it's in Old Town Stanwood.)
Not bad! Pretty tasty, even after a drive all the way to the end of the island (so it wasn't as hot, by the time I arrived and got to eat it.) The staff was able to make most of my requests happen, and the outcome was very tasty.
Notes for picky eaters and people with food sensitivities or allergies: The special "Mammoth sauce" is NOT Thousand Island and there's no relish in it. (Thank goodness!) It's quite tasty. (I called and asked and it's a mix of mayo, mustard, ketchup, BBQ, black pepper, and "stuff like that." It's good! Thankfully, no pickles/relish in it 🤢, and not too heavy on the mayo, either.) As much as I love garlic, the garlic fries are...a bit much. But smelled amazing on the drive home! I didn't notice any parmesan on them, as advertised on the menu.
The burger was really good! But I was honestly pretty full by the time I got to the fries. The fries themselves are tasty, but I got garlic ones, and they parmesan was missing and honestly the raw garlic was a bit much, even for a huge garlic fan like myself.
The service - everyone was SUPER NICE and helpful! A few things were missed on my order/special requests, but nothing unfixable. (Had asked for tomatos to be removed but weren't, no big deal. My drink was forgotten at pickup, also no big deal and easily remedied. I asked for ketchup, not included, but I have plenty at home.) Just noting so you know why I marked down a little on service. One of the people answering the phone didn't know if the jalapenos were pickled or not - but was able to ask and got a swift answer. They are (pickled), in-house, and VERY spicy. One of the pictures had raw ones, and the menu says house-pickled, and for some reason I can usually tolerate pickled ones, but not fresh ones, which is why I'm mentioning it (I know others who have similar issues with pickled vs fresh jalapenos, and I'm trying to add all the information I couldn't find elsewhere in the reviews, on the website, or on the menu.) I would definitely give it another go, but would probably forgo the garlic fries and just get the standard ones. It was very nostalgic as it's in the building the Stanwood Cafe and Bakery were (I think that's what it was called,) about 35 years ago. I remember being small and running in the hardwoods in the hall as fast as my tiny legs would take me, chasing my big brother. We learned "gnarly" and "cow-a-sak-i" there, back when (oh, the late 80s/early 90s! Don't have a cow, man!) and the related puns from the area. It's always such a sweet memory for me, and I love being able to go back there every so often when...
Read moreOur family tradition is to spend our long weekends in the San Juan Islands. Between the holidays and other getaways, I have racked up hundreds of trips up and down I-5 on my way to my happy place. For the last few years, my son and I have tried different roadside restaurants on our way back to civilization. Frankly, it is not a good route for finding good casual food. So, when he used Google Maps to find a new place to try, we were prepared for the worst. He picked Mammoth Burger in Stanwood from the search results. It was a bit out of our way, but we had time and a sense of adventure. Maps led us through a series of winding roads to a cute little street with various shops designed to tempt tourists. Mammoth Burger had their Memorial Day flags flying across the sidewalk and there was angle-in street parking right in front. The spacious restaurant is wood paneled, clean and inviting. A cheerful woman told us to pick a table anywhere and brought us menus. There was a good selection of burgers, including the eponymous Mammoth Burger which featured 1.5 pounds of meat, a quarter pound of cheese, six slices of bacon and a mound of toppings. We didn't have 10 or 12 friends along to help us eat it, so we picked more reasonably sized options. There was a selection of beers, but my son doesn't drink and I was driving so we went with milkshakes. Our cheerful waitress took our orders and scurried off to the kitchen. We had time to chat and plan our next trip to the islands before our food came. The burgers were big and juicy with craggily edges that crisped up nicely on the grill. The fries were standard, but came with a generous portion of sauce (The tartar sauce was the best). My son paid the bill, so I don't know the total damage, but the prices on the menu were about right for the quality of food we got. As we worked our way back into the I-5 traffic, we agreed that the next time we have time to get off the main road,...
Read moreBurgers... Basically you need to pick/watch your waitress. I've been in 3 times with my wife, the last time was with a reservation. regardless, the last 2 times the same waitress has accused me of coming in intoxicated and refused to serve me and also my wife the first time she was helping us. Not a fan of her. Doubt its important to mention my wife's pregnant while our excellent waitress was telling her she cant have drinks either in response my shock with her. The last time we were in I asked her if she would feel comfortable serving anyone else, she didn't even let me finish before she said " you cant get booze here, go home!". My friends (whom I had been bragging about the place to) came with us for their first time and my friend had a hair curling out of her wrap. I obviously pointed it out to the waitress and she had the wrap re-made; 60 minutes later, hair included and all. There was another one literally right after we told her what the problem was. It was draped over her wrap and hanging off the side of the plate. I am so embarrassed for having asked my friends to come here and having to suffer her service again. I can't IMAGINE recommending this place again. No apologies, no complimentary. She was just rude. I genuinely wish I caught her name, just to remember to ask for a different server if we go back in, but at the same time, I genuinely don't want to go back in. She has been so rude to us on multiple occasions. I have no sympathy anymore. No desire to see them. I highly recommend the Junkyard grill or Galbi Burger over this place. If it were Sunday I would wait 24 hours for the Duck Inn Cafe to be open Vs. going here again. We enjoyed our burgers and left her the tip we had intended on giving despite her... service. I would like to come back in, but if the staff is so adamant about not accepting business from us, I will not force them.
Decent food. Garbage service. Sort...
