Myself my husband and our daughter had a late breakfast there today they had never been and I had been a few times prior to COVID. The moment my husband walked in behind me I felt something in the atmosphere change immediately. It took a few minutes for our server to get there which was okay they were busy so we understood. People were staring at my husband and I could hear murmurs about us I ignored it at first but come on now a biracial family isn't THAT big of a deal. Our food came it was meh my daughter's pancakes were tough, my omelette was dry and rubbery with a SINGLE slice of what seemed to be prepackaged cheese(similar to a off brand kraft it wasn't even melted) I will say one of the waitress's(not ours) was incredible she interacted with us especially my daughter saying she was so cute and saying she should do pageants. Our waitress put the bill beside me and walked away no have a nice day, thanks for coming in nada. I went to the counter and paid...for the three of us it was $35 plus a five dollar tip which in all honesty I didn't want to give but I did anyway. It wasn't worth the price by ANY means. I felt like it was a waste of money and our time considering the food was horrible, both myself and my husband were uncomfortable being there. In the entire 7 years I've known my husband we've NEVER silently sat at a restaurant and ate. I was trying to avoid the crowd at IHOP and show him a nice little local spot that was incredible but I feel so horrible and feel like we should've just stuck to my...
Read moreMy friend and I were trying to find good home style restaurants in the greater Jacksonville Florida area and found Grannies’ Country Cookin’ restaurant in Starke to fit the bill perfectly. Everything was fantastic! The water even tasted better than most restaurants serve. We each ordered the chopped sirloin burger. with sautéed onions and gravy and I chose the homemade biscuit with sides of mashed potatoes and northern beans; and my friend chose the sweet cornbread with green beans and hash brown potatoes. The staff are all so friendly and the price for our food was only $16! You definitely have to come to Grannies Country Cooking in Starke. The owner even said that on Sundays they serve all-you-can-eat southern fried chicken. They’re only open from 5 am to 2-ish, so come early and hungry!
Update on 8/13/25: Came to enjoy something on their menu and the all-you-can-eat spaghetti sounds really good. $9.35? It is! Thanks to Robert, aka Dopey, and Grannie (there's actually one, believe it or not)
Update on 10/19/25: My wife and her son and I came for Sunday lunch and it was fabulous! Alonso chose the AUCE Chicken, which stands for All You Can Eat with cabbage and lima beans. My wife chose the pork chops with mustard greens and cabbage. Yours truly chose the turkey and dressing with mashed potatoes and green beans. We all chose corn bread. Our server did a great job and we appreciated having Robert, the "chief bottle washer," to stop by our table and ask how...
Read moreWe get through Stark 2-3 times a year and usually try to stop at Granny's. Never exceptional, but always good. Today we stopped in around 1 o'clock on a Sunday. We got the only open table, and had a very pleasant young waitress. I ordered the ayce chicken with loaded mashed potatoes. The menu states that it may take 25-30 minutes for fried chicken since it's made to order from Granny's special recipe. The waitress assured me since it was on special there was plenty made up. My lunch arrived a short time later, and I was underwhelmed. The chicken was tough, room temperature and looked like it has been cooked long before we arrived. The loaded mashed potatoes were stuffed in a side dish with a thin topping of a bacon and cheese mixture, again not even warm. The mashed potatoes might be home cooked, but not creamy or the least bit tasty. My wife had the grilled chicken, cold, small and average in taste. With the above mentioned potatoes. Yes the prices are great, service was great....but today they had problems in the kitchen. We may go back based upon past experiences. The place seemed different, maybe a...
