After my initial review, the owners contacted me and wanted to make things right. Honestly, I don't think I have ever received that level of customer service before. I was flabbergasted. Top notch. 5-stars.
I went back a week later (today). I got a full pizza this time as recommended by the owners. It was definitely better than the slices I had a week earlier.
I had a pick-up for noon -- it wasn't ready at noon. They were still dressing the pizza when I walked in at 12:01. I had to wait almost 10 minutes to get the pizza. I needed to get back to work, so I was a bit pressed for time, but it was fine.
The pizza had more sauce than previously. It wasn't horribly thin like last time. It also didn't taste old nor were the slices small.
The only thing is, I wish the sauce had a bit more pizazz. I like a more robust flavor. I really want to taste the natural sweetness of tomato. I am a sauce person and the sauce for me is my favorite part of any pizza. I wanted a bit more in the flavor department. The toppings were good and the crust was great.
I understand that maybe this pizza just isn't for me, but they are a great establishment and I want them to continue to have great success. While the pizza isn't what I am looking for, I will definitely recommend it to others. Who knows... I may come back, which is an improvement from how I felt last week.
Original Review 1-star It pains me a bit to leave a 1-star review since this place seems well liked, but, for me, it left a bad first impression.
My partner and I decided to try this place before we went home. We ordered 2 pepperoni slices and 2 vodka slices. When we got to our car, we noticed that we were only given 1 pepperoni slice. First mistake. I went back and got the missing slice with no issue.
When we got home to eat, my partner did not like the way the pepperoni smelled. I smelled it, and it did smell odd -- like old grease. Our slices had hardly any sauce. Not much flavor.
Then, when it was time to eat my second slice, the slice was small. It was half the size of the first slice - an egregious size for $5. After that, I was done. I go to NYC multiple times a year. I have pizza every time I go, so I know what it is. Today, this was not a good or even decent replication of it. It was a bad first impression, and, because of that, we won't...
Read moreCame in with a group for a bite to eat and some beers. J&J’s is connected to the Crooked Run brewery. J&J’s itself has some of their beers on tap, and a full liquor and wine bar selection. They have $5 dollar slices with a wide range of options or you can order a whole pie. They also have wings and other appetizers. The atmosphere is inviting, kid friendly, and they have a few games and even a stage for karaoke and live performances. Lots of seating- both indoors and out, and at the bar. You can take your beer and food right down the hall and connect to Crooked Run and sit in their establishment at their tables or bar. The staff is friendly, helpful and service was quick and easy. The pizza was delicious. Crooked Run was also a great place. With countless beers on tap (30 or so or more), and tacos and more on their menu. The outdoor seating area is my favorite with countless picnic style tables, and areas for kids to run around and play in. It’s accessible and easy to find despite being tucked away in an industrial style complex. Super clean. There are countless options for dietary needs including vegetarian, gluten free and more. 10/10...
Read moreFirst weekend they've been open, so I expected some jitters/hitches. Ordering was confusing, it looks like they moved it so all the ordering is done from the bars; not sure how recent that change is. Also some confusion from the staff about knowing which slices you could order. Might help if they put signs in front of the pies on display so customers know the name of what slices they want to order before they get to the counter.
The pizza itself was...ok. The cheese pizza was pretty bland, and the Hot Hawaiian had good toppings, but they stopped way too far away from the crust in my opinion. The mozz sticks had a good fry, but were basically solid cheese inside, no ooey-gooey goodness.
What will bring me back, though, is the Mambo Sauce wings. Those were incredible, the whole family dug into those. Great sauce, great fry on them. Senor Ramon's empanadas are still the star of the show for us when we visit Crooked Run, but I'll definitely be getting the...
