My buddy and myself went to the Hilltop Restaurant on Sept. 19th as it was within walking distance of the hotel we were at. Living in Wisconsin you get to eat a lot of fish fries. I am a big guy and I asked if the fish fry was all you can eat. The girl said no but that it was four big pieces and it would be more than enough for me to eat. We traveled all day and we were hungry. I trusted her. My mistake. The four pieces of fish were 1.5" by 2". Three of them would not have covered a $1 bill. I was stunned. This was the smallest portions I have ever seen in my life (I am 60) and both my friend and I laughed about it. How pathetic was this meal? I ate there once before when my daughter went to the college and the burgers are fine. Oh, and the bread they give you? Not a full slice, cocktail bread. This was the worst fish fry I have ever had. I will never go back to this restaurant. When the waitress came by to check on us and asked if there was anything we needed, I told her, "Yes, the rest of my fish." She said that that was all there would be. She did bring me two full slices of bread but no more fish. I left hungry and went to a fast food restaurant and got a burger. Very sad. Nice atmosphere but this place knows nothing about serving a good Wisconsin fish fry. I should have taken a picture. I told my friend that. You won't believe how small the portions were without it but trust me. Order anything other...
Read moreOk- walking in through a vintage beer aging barrel from the 1890’s is just the start of cool and amazing.
Ok we tried this in a whim- close to the hotel and had good reviews and a variety of items on the menu to fit all kinds of tastes
Were from “ the south” ( ok, Ohio) but we do know BBQ and the brisket here was absolutely, honestly, the best I’ve ever had ( and I’ve had me some brisket). The BBQ sauce was the perfect compliment and complimented ( vs overwhelmed) the meat selection. So much that I at mine open face even though it meant passing up a pretzel bun.
The fish sandwich was good and my family member was Looking for a smaller version of a Wisconsin fish fry.
The tenderloin sandwich was a great piece of steak cooked to order. Other nearby diners prefer this so it seemed to be quite popular.
It’s a “ return visit requested” kind d of place. So if you’re ever in the area - this should be in your “ priority stop” list if you need a good meal— no,make that a great meal!
Thanks for filling need we didn’t know we had. One in the part suggested we just get sketching from the grocery and eat in the room- so glad we didn’t...
Read moreWe have been going to the Hilltop since our girls were in college in Stevens Point, but it has been many years since we were there last. We had a very enjoyable lunch there on a recent Friday. I had the bratwurst on a pretzel bun. It was very good and more than a mouthful. With all the sauerkraut, onions and condiments, it was a very messy but really good lunch. The french fries were thinly cut and were outstanding when hot, but became a little tough and crispy as they cooled off.
I love onion rings and I was glad I had an order as an appetizer, although I really did not need them because I knew the brat would fill me up. But, I could not resist. The serving was a very generous amount of traditional cut onion rings thinly battered and served with a ranch dipping sauce. There were excellent; among the best I have tasted in recent memory.
Service was quick and friendly given it was the busy lunch hour. We were in and out in about 45 minutes which enabled us to maintain our traveling schedule.
Hilltop remains an excellent restaurant with outstanding food...
