We had been thinking of this place as a fusion restaurant or something, which is why we had put it off until we were not wanting something in particular, I guess it could be a type of fusion, just not in the way I thought it would be. We have eaten here a couple of times now and so far everything has been really good! We still have a lot of things to try but what we have tried is excellent. The Torta's are incredible, we have had them in Al Pastor and Carne Asada and both were packed full of everything, and big enough to last 2 meals each for us! The meat was tender and very flavorful and the bread is definitely from a Panaria somewhere, possibly from OKC maybe? I haven't asked where yet but it is the authentic style/flavor we are used to, not a Walmart or american bakery knock off. The fries are even good! I definitely wasn't expecting anything more than just the basic cheap fast food style fries a lot of privately owned restaurants serve. They were the battery dipped type instead giving them that extra crunch. Everything was most definitely worth every penny. We have also tried the Chili Colorado and the Chili Verde meals, both were excellent, we learned that the meals typically come with flour tortillas unless corn is specified on the menu. So we have started asking for corn just as personal preference, what we are used to having. The chips and salsa are good, it's the fresh type of salsa that isn't cooked first. The chips are made there from corn tortillas making them perfect for using to scoop up the meat and sauce or rice and beans. They are thick and dense so they don't break when using to scoop. I am definitely going to try their nachos at some point as these chips would be perfect for nachos, they would hold up well, not getting soggy quickly under everything. Its how we make our chips at home when making nachos. The horchata is excellent! Real, not the powder mix. Its perfect with spicy food, cool and sweet and full of cinnamon and vanilla. Definitely going to have to try the coffee options at some point, if we can get past the horchata. We may just end up having to get both. I honestly wasn't expecting too much, tried to keep an open mind as usual before coming here the first time and was very pleasantly surprised, enough so that we decided to try it again before leaving a review to make sure it didn't just seem so good because of the surprise... It definitely wasn't that, we walked away the second time with just as big an impression as the first. Reading other reviews, we are definitely going to have to try the queso next time! Maybe the nachos. What we have had so far is the type of food we are used to having from taco trucks, other authentic restaurants in Tulsa or at friends/ex husbands family's, houses for special occasions, this is just as good as anything we have had doing any of those things. We will...
Read moreHands down the best Mexican food in Stillwater!!!! I had ordered delivery at work a few days before, and me and my coworkers were blown away by how good the food was. I had the Chile Colorado which was phenomenal. The spice was perfect and the homemade tortillas made amazing tacos with some of the meat, rice and refried beans. The salsa was delicious, fresh, flavorful and went great with the thick crispy chips. Not gonna lie, at first I didn't think I would like the chips because they are thick and almost looked burned, but they taste amazing and are very crispy and seem homemade. We all liked it so much I took my wife out for dinner later this week, and it was even better in person. My wife got the shredded chicken chimichanga, and it came out piping hot, crispy on the inside and the chicken on the inside was moist, tender and flavorful. I got the molcajete bowl, which had huge chunks of skirt steak, grilled chicken, sliced cactus, chorizo and onions in a searing hot stone bowl with homemade flour tortillas. I ended up waiting to eat my food until the next day because we go so full on my wife's meal and chips salsa and queso. But even for leftovers I liked it better than any of the other restaurants in town. I don't know the owners, but I will say that whoever they have working the kitchen is doing a great job. My wife and I loved the quaint little dining area and how much interaction we could have with the waitress and how attentive they were. Not to mention, I got a drink, both of us got meals and we got queso and it was still less than $35. This will quickly become our new haunt! Great job everyone at...
Read moreStillwater’s little Café Mona, concealed in a strip mall on the north side of town may be a hidden gem for “Authentic Mexican Food.“ Let’s get to it! Starting with the chips served with their excellent salsa. Be sure to ask for the hotter version of the salsa. Neither is really that hot so, if you are like me you may still need to add some of the commercially made bottled hot sauce on the table. But, the café made sauces are good. You will notice that the chips are obviously hand cut small triangles, from corn tortillas and fried there; not commercially made chips! My wife ordered the Enchiladas Rojas: three Queso Fresco enchiladas topped in authentic red mole enchilada sauce and served with potatoes, carrots in a delicious Adobo sauce. It also came with rice and a small lettuce, tomato and sour cream salad on the plate. My wife loved the Queso Fresco in the enchiladas with the delicious sauces on them and the vegetables! The sauces on both meals were fantastic! Great Meal! I had to try the Chilaquiles Mexicanos. This was their tortillas chips smothered with their red mole sauce. The big plate of chips and sauce was then loaded with chopped grilled steak, queso fresco, red onion, and cilantro. Then the whole thing was topped off with a dollop of sour cream, guacamole, and crowned with a fried egg! Refried beans on the side! This was a big delicious filling meal! The service is fast. The staff is very friendly and attentive.
