Considering the remoteness of Stillwater, this has to be one of the best Asian cuisine restaurants in Stillwater. I've lived here for three years now and I haven't tried Golden Dragon until 6 months ago and I'm glad that I have. I've ordered here about 4 times now and have had a pleasant experience each time. I've tried their sesame and General tso, one of their curry offerings (can't recall which one I've tried), chicken and beef sticks, fried wontons, steamed and fried rice, Lo Mein, and eggrolls so far.
They just offer so much and I don't always have money to eat out so it's taking awhile to go through their menu, however I have to say that the chicken used for the sesame and general Tso has always been good. There was one time that it was overcooked, but they where incredibly busy that day and it still tasted great, just a bit harder to chew. Their lo Mein the two times I've tried it was always just ok, it's definitely not their strong suit, their rice noodles are much better.
The curry was some of the best I've had, and the portion you get is huge for what you're paying. The wontons are good but I prefer their eggrolls, as the wontons don't have a lot of meat to them, which is to be expected of wontons. Their chicken and beef sticks are alright. I love their rice, fried or steamed it tastes more authentic then some of the other Asian places in Stillwater or Tulsa. Especially when it comes to their fried rice, you'd be surprise how hard it is to fine a restaurant that can capture the proper texture and taste of steamed or fried rice.
The best part is that they Deliver. Sure it takes between 40 minutes to an hour but the people who take your order tell you that ahead of time so just be sure to order ahead of when you plan to eat. Their portions are big compared to the price so it's always a good deal to me.
Overall, most of what I've tried so far was great, their chicken is good and their rice and curry is what I really love from this place so far. The reason I give 4 stars is because it's a bit of a wait when ordering deliver, which isn't too much of an issue really, and their Lo Mein is just eh. If you want noodles, go with rice noodles, much better. Also their chicken, although pretty good compared to other places in Stillwater, isn't quit as good as I've had in my home town, but don't let that discourage you, there's barely any Asian place that come close to my home town's restaurant, but Golden Dragon is good in its own way, I'm glad it's here in Stillwater, otherwise I'd have little options for good Asian cuisine. I would recommend this place to anyone new to Stillwater looking for...
Read moreAlways excellent food, no complaints ever, well... except for the egg drop soup. It's so disappointing, especially when it's such a staple in every Chinese restaurant. GDC's is basically thickened cornstarch water with no flavoring. The only seasonings in egg drop soup are salt and garlic with a few dashes of ginger. That's all it needs, but the soup is like it has none of that in there. It's also white which is like it doesn't even have eggs in it. I've never seen white egg drop soup before. Very bland considering it's about the quickest easiest thing to make on the menu. But I'm always having to doctor it each time hoping that they'll get it together with the egg drop soup.
Here's my recipe for you guys to have happy Egg Drop Soup customers. Follow a recipe like this, then you guys will be 5 Stars in my book: 4 c chicken broth (Make your own broth with Knorr chicken powder) 2T cornstarch or ½-1 tsp xantham gum few shakes ginger 1/2 tsp ground garlic salt to taste 2 beaten eggs Add-ins 1 cup whole kernel corn or 1/2 cup green peas ¼ cup chopped green onion for garnish
Stir together broth, garlic, ginger, and cornstarch, then boil it until it gets clear. Constantly stir so that the cornstarch doesn't stick to the bottom of the pot. If you use xantham gum, this is a non issue. After you've gotten a boil and broth is clear, stir the broth quickly in one direction. While it's swirling, drop in your beaten eggs over a fork in the reverse opposite direction. Let it sit untouched for a minute or two, then give it one more swirl to "feather out" the eggs. Add more salt to taste. Done and done. I've used this recipe for almost 20 years and it is restaurant-style.
P.S. Will you ever put moo shu vegetables or egg foo yung (Chinese omelette) on the menu? Previous restaurants that I've been to have it on the menu, but I don't ever see it on your menu. It would be nice if you would be accomadating for that. I would pay A LOT extra for those simple menu items! But, it's a bummer, for now I have to see if they are available at other Chinese...
Read moreWe hadn't eaten here in a couple of years (until today) as they had been extremely disappointing repeatedly over months and months a few years ago and then everything shut down with all the Covid stuff. Almost everything was good, much better than in the past with the exception of the pork dumplings. They were hands down the absolute worst any of us have ever had, yet they were quite literally the most expensive we have ever paid for at $7 for 6 dumplings. The outer pastry was thick, flavorless, and extremely hard to chew and the inside was so overcooked it only took up half the space inside the pastry and just kind of rattled around inside. We each choked down one, and gave the other two to the dog and even she sat chewing on them a few mins and she's a 70lb AmBully with tough jaws. The dipping sauce was too sweet for any of us, no savory or spicy balance to it. Overall they were extremely disappointing and we will most definitely not be ordering them again. We will stick to Happy Buddha for pork dumplings, they definitely still have the best in town, and are reasonably priced at just over $4 for 8 and the dipping sauce has a good balance of flavor... Aside from the dumplings everything else was good. The s&s pork wasn't overcooked as it has been in the past and we still prefer their s&s sauce and the house hot mustard over anywhere else around. The sesame beef was really good and the eggrolls are the best in town! The crab rangoon was good, still have not been able to actually find any crab meat lol but that could be said for basically all places. We really miss being able to get those ordered to go at New China as they had the best in town for the best price, but I have started making my own most of the time as they are cheap and easy to make. Overall, we had a much better experience than we have had in years past and will be coming back the next time we are craving egg rolls, s&s and house mustard. Posting a photo of the dumplings just to show how they were, it may have just been a bad batch, but I'm not taking chances...
