We really disappointed in El Rio Grande last night, which I hate to say because we've visited several times a year for the past five years or so. The food has always been fine-- reliable, inexpensive Mexican food. Last night at 7 PM, we ordered two entrees for carry out and were told it would be ready by 7:30. The food wasn't brought out until 7:45 and the restaurant closes at 8 PM-- this would normally not bother me. However, we ordered the burrito Mexicano with shredded beef. Here's the description from the menu: "A burrito stuffed with your choice of shredded beef or pork, with cheese sauce, burrito salsa, lettuce, tomato, cheese and generous portion of guacamole on top." The burrito section of the menu says "Served with a side of rice and beans." Honestly feel like they ran out of food by 7:30 and did not want to prepare anything before closing at 8 PM. It was a wet tortilla filled only with greasy ground beef--not shredded beef as advertised. There was no rice and no beans. There was maybe a teaspoon of guacamole mixed into the lukewarm wilted lettuce. I almost did not notice that there was any guac at all. The burrito was lukewarm at best. I did not feel safe eating it because it felt like it had been sitting out for a long time. I had one bite and threw the rest in the trash. Unfortunately, they were closing by the time we could go back and ask for a refund or new food. It was disappointing because they usually do a fine job-- but I really feel like they gave us the scraps from the...
Read moreFood was barely edible. Seen server 3 times...1. took drink order 2. dropped off drinks and stale chips & salsa; 3. dropped off bill. This was after someone else dropped off food and a different person took our barely eaten plates away. I would have said something but I wasn't the one paying, never seen anyone to say something to, and we were in a hurry especially by the time check was dropped off. The person who picked up our plates was there and gone so quickly didn't really get a chance to say anything. I do slightly regret not getting up and finding someone but didn't want to rock the boat in the dining situation I was in.
As an aside I've worked in many different restaurants and it gives me insight into what may have gone wrong in a bad dining experience and I always hesitate to leave a 1 star review. (I've performed nearly all positions-dishwasher/busser, manager, cook, and server.) That being said the problem with the food didnt seem to be a mistake on our meal, it was cooked ok, it just tasted bad and was a seasoning and ingredient quality problem. It also was not an issue of being too busy. There was one other table (1 top) in the entire restaurant. Guess I shouldn't have assumed this was only because it was 2 p.m. on a weekday.
I am not a big eater and never leave a place...
Read moreI wasn't overly impressed with this restaurant. I'm going to give them a second chance at some point, but overall the food was bland and greasy.
We showed up about 30 minutes before they closed the kitchen. We made note of that with the hostess and she said it would be fine if we ordered quickly. Which we did.
We both ordered the Super Veggie Burrito. Which wasn't vegetarian, because they cook their rice in chicken broth. I didn't mind that mostly because I wasn't going to eat the rice. However, with the Super Burrito they stuff everything inside so you don't have a choice. If I wasn't ordering in a hurry I probably would have paid more attention to that. The other part to that is the beans are so greasy that you can see through the tortilla shell and eventually the end of it is a soupy mess.
I wont order that again or come in that late, but I will give them another...
