The WhistlePig Pavilion o Stowe Vermont is wortht he trip! With fire pits on their porch and located in the center of Spruce Peak's shops, right next to their open air skating rink, I was fortunate to visit at the end of last season for a brief lunch. I easily could have spent a few hours here. The cocktails were great and the exposed fireplace allowed us to watch all the great dishes being prepaired. Lots of Raclette cheese!

Nice place with great atmosphere located at the base of the Stowe ski slopes. The wait staff was awesome explaining the menu and options. The food was excellent, tasty and priced a little high but considering where they are and the limited number of people they get versus a restaurant, one would expect a little higher prices. Now let me get to why they only get 3 stars. Whistlepig, the whisky brand whose home is Vermont, had a wide selection of their famous whisky’s. I ordered their basic Old Fashioned ($28). Needless to say I was pretty disappointed in this drink. It came in a plastic “glass”, with regular bar type ice - the kind that melts pretty rapidly (and dilutes the drink) instead of the big cube one would expect from a nice place that serves their signature brand. The drink had a sliver of an orange. This drink was something you’d expect to pay $5 for at a local bar. Very underwhelmed and a total let down. Whistlepig should work on this. This let down actually made me reconsider buying a bottle of their whisky to take home with me (I didn’t buy one). Oh well - at least the food was good.

The first night at The Lodge we dined here and the service was good. The food was decent. Staying in the middle of the week, during the off season doesn't afford you many options in the number of places to eat. We ended up ordering take-out another night. My husband enjoyed the pulled chicken on the first night so he ordered it for take-out with extra potato salad and coleslaw. Instead what we got was a side of corn and mac n cheese. Not what he ordered. When we called to say they gave us the wrong order, they insisted that the chicken was somewhere in the bag. I promise you, the chicken was NOT in the bag. They sent the poor hostess up to our room to argue this to us and only sent the replacement sides- still no pulled chicken. After a second trip, she dropped off a little portion of chicken- half the size of what we were served in- restaurant the first night. Not sure what else to say.

Staying at the lodge and today has been on/off rain. My husband was excited to try the food here. When we arrived, we were able to be seated without a wait because we sat near the bar area (bar top, 3 stool). Almost all other tables are picnic/family style. We ordered 2 draft beers, they were warm. We watched as others arrived & were told seating would be a bit of a wait. The reason for this was that the servers (there were only 2) couldn't keep up with cleaning the tables. We then ordered food and a second round of drinks. The drink were at least cool this time around. Food took.a long time, we watched the servers tell people they were short staffed, heard the staff complaining about being open on days they weren't open before but management didn't prepare to have it staffed properly, and a woman who ordered take out arrived & they told her that her order was behind because of short staffing. My burger arrived and was supposed to come with BBQ chips. I would describe the burger as just fine and the "chips" were just a few crumbs of what I would describe as my kids leaving in the pantry because they couldn't be bothered throwing out the bag. My husband ordered the Mac & cheese with chicken. Also described as "just fine" although it was definitely not hot, more like lukewarm.

Overall, very disappointing. I actually did feel bad for the 2 servers trying to manage everything, but openly & loudly complaining isn't exactly what a customer wants to hear the entire time...

Gosh, I really wanted to like this place and was excited to check it out after a morning on the mountain, but I was utterly disappointed. I have worked in restaurants and now I sometimes write about them and so the fact that they refuse to make a regular Manhattan—no, you must order the special $35 reserve Manhattan—is really something else that I have not seen. To be clear: I am not opposed to spending $35 on an excellent cocktail though the drinks that actually merit that price are few and far between. You are a whiskey bar — you should be able to make a classic $20 Manhattan. Oh, and maybe don’t serve expensive whiskey in plastic cups!! This place is a total ripoff. Food was just ok. We ordered The Wurst, one of the raclette specialty dishes, and it was tasty if a bit stingy with ingredients. To be expected I suppose from a place that prefers to gouge people on drinks, and I say this as a New Yorker who is used to overpaying for everything (average beer price: $13. You are much better off going to Alchemist where you can get a pint of the most delicious beer for $6). TLDR:...
