I lived in First Colony a few years. This was my go-to Asian night diner spot. This is one of the only things I miss about living in the area. I grew up in SW Houston, next to China Town. I am also a hard-core foodie! Growing up so close to the being able to choose from the most authentic Asian cuisine and having several friends that are Asian, my review of a quality Asian restaurant does not come lightly. This is a complex cuisine, and the 5-flavor complexity is not easy to master.
Café Goo Goo Yen has mastered my favorite dishes. General’s chicken is my go-to litmus test of any good Chinese food restaurant. The sauce is complex and not easy to master. Café Goo Goo Yen has mastered it indeed. Their steamed rice is also perfect.
I love how they have delivery to homes in the area. This was a life saver after I had my baby. The driver is always courteous and friendly. The food is always delivered hot and perfect.
Also, when I pick up, they got to know me as a regular. If I had my baby in the car, they were nice enough to bring my order out to my car so that I wouldn’t have to struggle with the baby. I just paid over the phone with my card. I appreciate everyone’s quality work at Café Goo Goo Yes, for going above and beyond to provide the very best customer service and the yummiest food in the area!
I eat a Whole 30 diet, so this was my “cheat night” food. But if I was going to splurge to treat myself on my “off” day from my diet, it was always Café Goo Goo Yen!
Be sure to get the “diner” portions, not the “lunch special (with the egg roll)” because the portion is larger, and I like to have leftovers for later in the day or the next day. The lunch spec. ial is a good price, but the food is so delicious, you will want more. For me, I like getting 2 meals out of this. For my husband, he can eat an entire diner portion and need a side of spring rolls to...
Read moreYou would think that having a group of 20 women, that the restaurant would do a good job in regards to service, etc. But it appears that they didn’t care! We had two tables of 10 people each. The tables were right next to each other. A female server took the order at one table and even started serving their soups, etc. No one came to the second table to take our orders. We flagged a worker and told them that we hadn’t even ordered yet and she pointed to a male server but he was busy serving others in the restaurant. We waited and waited and no one ever came. Apparently, the person we had flagged didn’t care about resolving the problem. We finally told the lunch organizer in our group who was eating at the other table that no one had taken our order and to talk to someone about getting the job done. Lo and behold, the female server who was servicing the other table came to take our orders. The other table had gotten their main dishes and she HAD TOTALLY IGNORED US the whole time!!!!!! Why???? Regarding the food when we finally got it, there were comments such as ‘the broth was bland in the wonton soup, the beef had grizzle and was a cheap grade of meat, I’ve never had fried rice that was nothing but rice, my dish is just so-so, etc. etc.’ Our group doesn’t ever plan to go back to Café...
Read moreWhat a horrible experience. I ordered Mongolian Beef, House Lo-Mein Noodles, & Hot & Sour Soup. The soup was cold! The food portion on the Mongolian beef was extremely small. $27 for a dinner that could only feed a mouse! There was barely any beef, mainly onions and overly sauced. The noodles were cold & plain, it tasted like rubber? It seems like they served us food that's been sitting there already before we ordered. It was a hour away from closing time and I think they got lazy on me since it was 9pm , they didn't take the time to fully cook the food. I am very disappointed in Goo Goo Yen... Also, my aunt bought me a $30 gift card for a Xmas gift to me, and they forgot to put the actual card inside the envelope... all they gave her was an envelope w/ the dollar amount written in pencil. She had to go back to the restaurant, waste gas, and get the gift card they forgot to place inside. When I called to make my complaint, they disregarded my concerns and didn't offer a refund nor the same meal made fresh again. They just don't care! Poor management skills, no customer service, and poor Asian food quality. I will never eat at Goo Goo Yen ever again. They do not know how to treat their long-time customer who has been eating there for 10+ years. ...
