I’ve been indulging in a lot of soup lately since I haven’t been feeling well, and that brings me to my latest experience with Pagoda in Summerville. I consider myself a bit of a broth snob—there’s something special about the time it takes to create a good chicken stock.
I decided to order a small wonton soup from their website, where it was listed at $2.75. What a deal, right? However, when my husband picked up the order, we were charged $3.90. Apparently, there’s been a price change per their printed menu, which wasn’t reflected online—a small annoyance, but worth noting.
Now, onto the soup. The broth was actually quite good—not just plain yellow chicken broth but something with a bit more flavor. I’d possibly order it again. My main gripe is that a small soup came with only two wontons. Is this normal? Maybe it is, but I’ve been to other places in the Charleston-Summerville area that serve more wontons even in their small soups.
While I might go back, I’d recommend asking ahead about the number of wontons if that’s a dealbreaker for you. You may want to upgrade to a large if two wontons won’t cut it. Overall, I’d say Pagoda is worth a shot, but manage your expectations for portion sizes.
If you are a soup broth snob like myself this place is definitely worth it giving it a try because it is...
Read moreWe ordered this food for the first time in search of a good Chinese restaurant. On the recommendation of my husband's coworkers we took a chance on this place and I have to say we we're disappointed. Although the portion sizes were substantial, some of the food was lacking in flavor and just not good at all. We ordered the Marinated Chicken Wings which had good flavor but also had a very bad after taste. The Gerneral TSos' chicken was inedible. It was as if every sauce they had; brown, sweet and sour, garlic, ect was poured over some very hard fried pieces of chicken , tossed together with a few carrots and poured in a styrofoam container. It didn't taste like anything remotely resembling any General TSos' chicken that I've ever had in my life. The spring rolls we're delicious, however don't expect any specific sauce made just for them. No onions in the House fried rice (Pagoda fried rice) whice made the rice tasteless. The house soup (Pagoda Wonton soup ) was delicious. Chicken Lomein was good. Needless to say, won't order from this place again. The prices were okay but you get what you pay for. We are still in search for a good Chinese restaurant in...
Read moreStill one of the best Chinese places in all of South Carolina. Some of us have been eating here for 30+ years with no problems ever. I really wonder about some of these more recent bad reviews here. I cannot picture this place doing (or serving!) some of the things mentioned! My guess is they managed to tick off a vengeful person - Probably wanted something they couldn't give. These people have always been extremely nice and respectful - Sure, they might even sound angry or loud at times but yanno what? They are from a different culture! It happens! That does not mean they are being rude or angry! Sometimes one needs to look at where someone is coming from rather than looking at how they want them to behave! At any rate, they aren't about to substitute meats or any of the craziness a few have written! They've been here with high quality food since the 80s - They're not about to change all that now! With those who know, they remain in every bit as high esteem as ever! And I commend them for trying to stick with safety and with what...
