Update: 3/10/25 Ordered the Philly Cheesesteak since I was with a friend from Philly. He had a good laugh saying it was nothing like it would be in PA since it wasn't with the kind of cheese they use and it had mushrooms. I wasn't expecting mushrooms either since I didn't see that listed, but I love mushrooms, so it was a nice surprise for me but would be a bad surprise if someone didn't like them! We sat outside but the traffic on 99th made it hard to converse. Maybe a little privacy fence/sound barrier could make it more pleasant. Friends ordered the regular burgers and said they were fine, but were off put that combos substantially more. All of us would have preferred paper over plastic cups, but were pleased at the paper liner and reusable basket since that's the minimal waste and no-plastic/styrofoam we prefer, so 3 cheers there. Update: Returned recently for a Chicago Dog and found it to be everything I expected in a Chicago Dog and was just like the pictures, although I didn't see signs assuring me that they are using the expected Vienna brand, so if they are, they should make that more prominently known since that is a big selling point. The mushroom appetizer was tasty too--not greasy and was juicy inside. Around holiday time in 2023, I accompanied my friend and I just had a soda since I had already eaten at home, but she had a burger with peppers and onion and cheese and loved it. Since I was just sipping my soda, I had lots of time to observe the caring staff and their interactions with the customers (including Benny himself) which was nice to see. Last year's review was for fish so I'm leaving that at 3 stars below under "Fish." This update is based on the Korean Burger:Last year's review was for fish and this time it's for their Korean Burger. I posted the picture and the one I received, so you can compare. The unique taste of Korean barbecue sauce is what makes this bacon, slaw, mushroom burger special, so if you've never had that type of sauce, you will find it eye openingly delicious, but I use it regularly at home, so that's not a major selling point for me. However, I did like the combination of slaw-like veggies, cilantro, mushrooms and bacon, so that's some nice creativity, although the presentation was a far cry from what was expected from the picture. Inside there is a clean counter service restaurant with a friendly vibe including an amiable "write your comments on a post-it" bulletin board. There is very limited outdoor seating, and it's right on 99th and Bell so nothing to look at but traffic. Nice to have a creative non-chain burger available, so yeah, I'd return to support it. P.S. Good work with the minimal packaging! I sure don't need styrofoam for a burger or a plastic bag to carry it in--the paper was just fine. Love that they have the little paper cups that you can fold out for better access to the sauce.
"Fish": I'm guessing I just ordered the wrong thing, but it was Friday and I saw the all-you-can eat fish advertised in the window, so I got the fish and it was a mistake. If you like supermarket frozen fish but don't want to drop it into hot oil yourself, and the same for fries, then this is the place to get it. I expect more unless I purposely enter through golden arches or the realm ruled by a burger king, but this being a non-chain local place had me unprepared. Honestly, everything that I saw other people eating looked delicious: Chicago style dogs, substantial burgers, and tacos spilling out Korean style barbecue. But my meal wasn't a total loss--I did like the slaw that came with it: fresh and light and not out of a tub, so it points to what I suspected: Benny's at its best is probably when they serve up fresh burgers with some special toppings and barbecued meat as in the tacos. I'll need to confirm my suspicion sometime. But even without trying the other items, I hope Benny's will consider dropping items that bring down the overall quality of the establishment and sticking with what they do best or first timers such as myself may not make the...
Read moreVisited Benny’s for the first time! 8/28/24 Since we’d recently moved to the area (Sun City) we’re ALWAYS looking for the best small businesses. We were ISO a good burger-spot that wasn’t just some big expensive burger chain, like Jack’s or Freddy’s. And when we tasted Benny’s? WOW! We’re so glad we stopped.
It was about 2:30/3p when we stopped by, but surprisingly, almost ALL wall/window tables were full! It was pretty busy, despite our visit being in between lunch and dinner, but there was a table by the door with two chairs, so we took that one. My boyfriend had gotten a pastrami burger, and I got a classic—Both with avocado. And, I’ve gotta say? I am SO elated to see a business that ISN’T charging $3-$5 just to add avocado to a burger. It’s such a simple thing, but thank you for not assaulting the wallets of your customers over vegetables/add-ons!!
The front lady was VERY kind, and even though we hadn’t immediately stated that this was our first time there, she still explained every part of how they serve their burgers. You could tell that she cares! They do charge extra for each slice of cheese on a classic, though—which isn’t mentioned anywhere, except by their specialty burgers. Despite the pictures of the classics all having cheese—This extra charge was definitely a surprise to us. Extra dollar aside, the flavor of a classic is a bit comparable to Portillo’s—but less of that strong, tangy mustard—and more creamy and savory, with Benny’s classic burger. The meat was hot and fresh, with thick patties, and plentiful amounts of veggies & sauce. The fries are seasoned, so after your first bite, you may think for a moment that you need salt, but after the second bite? Nah. They’re perfect the way they are. All around, the best burger place we’ve visited in a while. Spent about $30. But it’s worth the price—Unlike Portillo’s, or Freddy’s. Coming back soon, to try more than just their burgers....
Read moreI was craving a homemade burger and Google sent me to Benny's. The burgers pictured showed exactly what i wanted. I ordered a spicy mango combo with added jalapeños with onion rings and a soda. The reviews I read said that the shakes were great, so I ordered mango/strawberry shake. When my order was brought to me, my soda was missing. Before beginning my feast, I checked my receipt, since $ 24.00 seemed steep for what I ordered. I was charged $ 10.59 for my combo, but the jalapeños were an additional $ .50 and the onion rings were $ .79 as a substitution. They pulled a bait and switch on me by charging me $ 3.60 for substituting a shake for the soda, which comes with the combo, then they charged me an additional $ 2.39 for a soda (which should have been part of my combo)!!!!!!! Unethical, but I was almost home before I saw this slight of hand. I always tip well, so with the $ 1.13 tax and my $ 5.00 tip, I payed $ 24.00. I was very angry, but I decided to not let my anger ruin my dinner. My burger looked nothing like the picture which caught my attention on the menu. It was supposed to have a slice of pepper jack cheese and a slice of American cheese. These cheese slices were extremely thin as I could barely see them and definitely could not taste them. The jalapeños were absent and the taste of mango was nowhere to be found. Big disappointment. The onion rings were overcooked/burnt. The onion slices were so thin that their taste was overpowered by the bland, burnt coating. I think that I counted seven onion rings in total. The shake, however, was delicious. I cannot recommend this place for two major reasons; very low quality food, and; overpriced by cheating on your order. Yes, I consider charging for additional items which are not added and moving items as substitutions to charge as upgrades then charging items which are part of a combo separately cheating. Very...
