Philz Coffee — Restaurant in Sunnyvale

We live within walking distance of Philz and have gone many times pre-covid. This was our first during COVID experience and it was mildly confusing yet we still figured it out and ended up with two delicious cups of cold brew coffee. Imo, their system needs some clarification. The app says no need to wait in line but when you get there you have to... Wait in line... To check-in and pick up your order. If it's ready, they bring it to you and on you go. If not, they will call your name when it is ready. In the end, you will still get your handmade and consistently tasty coffee. I got my cold brew straight on ice and found it perfectly tasty, nutty, smooth, strong the way cold brew is, and better than Starbucks (my wife challenged me to a ind taste test next time to see if I can tell the difference, haha). My wife got hers with non-fat and stevia and it brought out different flavors for sure and was still really good. I'm glad they added cold brew to their lineup and will certainly get it again, especially while the weather is hot. Hope you try it and enjoy it too!

Not in the mood for iced? They still have plenty of good hot coffees. Ordering sweet and creamy means cream and sugar is added in generous but balanced proportions which complement the coffee, but for those of us looking for healthier alternatives they've got just about every kind of milk and sweetener too. I suggest trying Jacob's Wonderbar or the Silken Splendor for more of a rich chocolate flavor, those are my favorites. I'm also a fan or almond milk or oat milk, light, because it complements the flavors...

Overall pretty good place for delicious coffee.

-Coffee quality: very good. I usually pick up a black dark roast on my way to the Caltrain on weekends, and I can always expect a damn fine cup of Joe regardless of selection. The caffeine content seems to be quite high for dark roasts here, compared to standard: just enough to let you tackle a day out in the city with vigor, but not so much that it'll get you nervous/anxious when it's your first/only cup. -Service: Very good, have always been received professionally/politely and the wait is about expected for the preparation procedure they use. -Atmosphere: Pretty good, not much seating given the traffic they receive at peak times, but outdoor seating is available in the shopping area. Not a place I'd sit and work in all day, but I don't think that's what they're going for. -Cleanliness: very good. Bathroom and public areas are all at least and usually better than acceptably-clean. -Price: the only reason I take a star off. Even the boutique coffee places I go to back in Central New Jersey (where I'm from, another very expensive area) won't charge more than $2.50 for a cup of black coffee. Here I get charged $3.50 for a 12 oz. cup of coffee. Even for the Bay Area this is ridiculous, but I tolerate the price for the quality/convenience.

Overall: come here if you're an occasional coffee drinker who's willing to pay more for great quality and taste, or if you're looking for a damn good cup of coffee on the way to the Caltrain right...
