Little Saigon is your typical Vietnamese / Asian supermarket. It's located right off of Paxton Street, near the intersection of 29th & Paxton and with easy access to i-83. they have all kinds of imported stuff from the orient, mostly korean, chinese, vietnamese, thai and indonesian. they have some meat and fish and fruits that i've always been suspicous about, (is it fresh or not, and if it wasnt would you tell me anyway, even if i asked politely?)
i used to get certain types of food here, like oxtail and triple. sometimes they have it, sometimes not. there are sweet cakes, soy milk, longan, leche, durian, clam meat, fish, squid, cocount milk, crab meat, fish crackers, pineapples, corn, mie, noodles, .... pots, pans, plates, steamers, wonton skins, potatoes, cucumbers, carrots, single eggs, tomatoes, tarot, jackfruit, tofu, spring rolls, beansprouts, lettuce, jalapenos, bread rolls, vietnamese hoagies. a vietnamese hoagie is only 1.75, but well worth it is mega spicy and sweet at the same time. its basically a roll thats glazed wit ha sweet sauce, sliced orange & white carrots, sliced pork and jalapeno peppers. DELICIOUS!!!!
they do have some types of indonesian herbs, spices and ketchup, seasoning stuff like that. but i have noticed short-dated items, and at least 1 item that had the expiration date blacked out (it was expired).
Little Saigon is a staple of the community though. they guys who own this also own the jumbo buffet building next door, it also has a quiznos, Xpose nail salon and car repair shop, Autorizon. These people are seriously nice, they teach me one word of vietnamese each time I go there. And they usually have three indonesian people there too, so its cool i can practice my indonesian skills, which are terrible.
They have bulletin board when you first walk in that has various ads and messages in vietnamese that advertise cars for sale, apartments and houses for rent, nail salons available, church services, transportation and so forth. There is usually a lady at the cash register, and they only take cash, credit or EBT.... and it actually IS wheelchair accessible. pulling out of this place and trying to turn left is impossible, but parking is...
Read moreWhat a find! Little Saigon Restaurant is one of the best Pho restaurants we've been to. Little Saigon fits a pattern of some of the better Vietnamese restaurants: an austere dining room in a nondescript building serving excellent food. My wife ordered the Hot Sub Sandwich: this Bahn Mi sandwich was great. The pork was sweet, the baguette crunchy and flavorful. We both thought it was the best banh mi we've ever had. Where they get their baguettes should be a national treasure. My wife also had the Mixed Noodles with pork, shrimp and lettuce: this was a dish that we had never had before: while it was tasty, it wasn't my wife's favorite Vietnamese dish. I had the Regular Beef Rice Noodle Soup (Beef Pho with Steak and Brisket). Fantastic! Folks who follow me know I go for baseline dishes: I know if they do this right, they're going to be good overall. This pho was hearty and flavorful, rich with many flavors. In each of our dishes the ingredients were fresh and lovingly prepared. As we were leaving my wife picked up some Sesame Balls: don't leave without getting a few for yourself. The atmosphere at Little Saigon is austere but clean. It is a bit strange to see a couple of Christmas trees in the back. Maybe they're just anticipating, and, heck, Costco has their Christmas stuff out, so… Prices seemed reasonable. In fact, from our perspective, Little Saigon was a bargain, nut we're not familiar with costs in general in the Harrisburg area, so we'll just say prices were very reasonable. While Little Saigon wasn't packed when we were there for a late lunch, there were a number of people in the restaurant. We found sound levels to be fine for conversation. Our waiter was pleasant and efficient: my wife was served first, and my pho came out later. While we like to be served together, we can understand that the kitchen was aiming for food to arrive at the table when it was ready. In this regard I was lucky: my wife shared half of her delicious banh mi sandwich. Parking is good, with a spacious parking lot. Altogether Little Saigon is certainly well worth visiting. And… don't forget to get a few...
Read moreGo to Bamboo Pho & Tea (they won't screw you if you order extras) or Kimlee Vietnamese.
Tried this place 3 times. The pho broth is hit or miss; twice it was completely underseasoned, only one time was it right.
On my last visit, I ordered a grilled pork banh mi with extra meat and vegetables. I weighed out the meat, and it was the same amount for a regular order. I called in let to the owner know and he said he'll get it right next time. I asked for it to be remade and I will pick it up immediately.
As I go in to pick it up, I was told I had to pay for it (with it being an extra $6) because I was "undercharged" for the first sandwich. It was explained to me that I was only charged the first time for extra vegetables, and was not charged for extra meat. I told them I was not given extra meat, and they would not agree despite showing them a picture of the weigh-out. I left after some...
