I love supporting local businesses and am willing to offer them multiple chances to earn my loyalty but I'm about 50-50 when it comes to Au Peche Mignon because half of the time I am satisfied with my purchase and the service is normally 100% satisfactory with friendly and patient service attendants. Overall rating ~3.5 stars
I have yet to try their bread loaves or sandwiches but have tried many of the desserts and pastries. The pastries are my favorite because they usually taste and flake as they should. My only disappointment was when I ordered a guava pastry and there was less than 1/8 tsp of guava paste inside the bread. On another occasion I purchased macarons and was given two that were extremely broken/cracked. This is unacceptable, especially for how the product is meant to be presented and the price paid.
Lastly, for the desserts, I am only somewhat satisfied with the flavors. The desserts are generally light and airy, which is a delight but there tends to be a lack of flavor depth. The flavor profiles are correct but if I close my eyes while eating part of their chocolate cake, most times I wouldn't know I'm eating chocolate. I don't need the excess sugar, but flavors such as vanilla, chocolate, almond, coffee... they're very easily deepened in food -- without excess sugar. Trained bakers and chefs know this.
The artistry and precision used in making the desserts and pastries at this bakery are top quality and I will continue to give them chances but I hope they work on improving their flavors because I expect to taste amazing cake when I'm...
Read moreDon't even bother with this sorry excuse for pâtisserie. Commissioning a cake was a terrible experience, with a lot of hostility from the staff.
They advertise their cakes as something entirely different than what they deliver. They also try to upcharge any modifications, but then under deliver on the what they advertise!
The girl who took the order was extremely stand offish during the entire process of commissioning the cake and didn't seem to communicate to the baker any of the details she asked us for the commissioned cake.
I commissioned a Frasier, which had no kirsch, wasn't colored, had overwhipped cream (which also lacked kirsch), and yellow cake that was so light and dry it might as well have been bad angel food cake.
Their baker puts in less effort than advertised and becomes extremely hostile when you express disapproval over the overpriced cake being not what was agreed upon. What's even worse is that the baker clearly scribbled out all of the details that were written on the receipt and decided to not even do the base amount of detail that goes into the cakes that they advertise. Instead of owning up to this he simply blamed the girl who wrote the notes in the first place!
What kind of baker doesn't even properly whip cream or prepare a proper yellow cake? What kind of manager blames their staff for their own shortcomings and laziness? What kind of business owner under delivers and becomes hostile (wide eyed yelling) with a client when they didn't provide what was...
Read moreA bit of a macaron connoisseur, I look for them everywhere I go. The macarons at this establishment are messy and do not look appealing. They're under macronaged and therefore have the telltale nipple in the center of the shell. They also looked very chalky and lopsided. The service was similar.
I was greeted immediately, however, I'd just walked in and didn't have a chance to even look in the cases. The young man behind the counter seemingly expected me to tell him immediately what I wanted, however, a Caucasian couple who came in after me and was greeted by a young lady, received a much more pleasant welcome that included an opportunity to browse before having to place an order.
Lastly, the young man was wearing gloves. He did not use utensils or tissue paper to remove my item from the case. He used his gloved hand (granted the item was on a paper round). He took my cash from my hand but placed my change on the counter, answered the phone and still did not change his gloves after serving me.
The good news- the baton was glorious! The meringue was light and beautiful. The filling was not too heavy and the entire pastry was...
