Wow! This is the real deal. One bite and I way immediately transported to the French Quarter.
New Orleans Seafood is an unassuming store in a strip mall that only does take out. But don't let any of that stop you. Head on in and look up at a menu that focuses on shrimp, oysters, catfish and, when in season, crawfish. You can get the fish on a traditional Po Boy sandwich, at part of a platter (including various combos of fish) or all by themselves. They also sell gumbo, etouffe and red beans and rice. We decided to try a bunch of things for our first visit: Shrimp Po Boy, fried oyster platter, gumbo and etouffe.
First bite of the Po Boy and I way in heaven. The bread is brought in from New Orleans, the huge quantity of shrimp were perfectly fried, and the sandwich was "dressed" with mayo, lettuce, tomato and pickles (trust me, your want it dressed "all the way"). It was simply a perfect sandwich. The fried oysters were cooked well, although I'd prefer the oysters and accompanying fries a little crispier.
The gumbo was fantastic. It was full of amazing ingredients, including some fantastic sausage. And it had a little heat: these guys don't shy away from seasoning, which is a very good thing IMHO. The etouffe, a combination of shrimp and crawfish in a creamy sauce, was also outstanding.
This is my new go-to place for fried fish. And I'm be dreaming about that Po Boy...
Read moreIâve never had someone be so rude and unkind to me on the phone. It was the business owner. I asked about the oyster basket and was told that he doesnât have time to answer questions that I can look at a menu or come in. I said I have a menu, can you just answer my question about your basket? I was asking if there was a combination option or an option to get a side of fish. Nothing so difficult. He said he runs a small business with many menu items and he doesnât have time to answer questions, that I should look at a menu online or come in and look at a menu and hung up!? The whole call was 38 seconds. I was surprised but got over it because I really wanted some Oysters. I looked at the menu again and called back to order simply, when he answered he said so rude and arrogantly laughing at me before I could even order âHi! you Called back! You figured out how a menu works And still want to order then?â not anymore. Not a business I will ever support...
Read moreI'm not from Florida, but I travel to Tallahassee a few times a month for business. I googled and decided to try 'New Orleans Seafood' yesterday. First and last time. I ordered the $10 mullet sandwich and the six shrimp with hushpuppies for $7.50.
For $18.81, the bag seemed suspiciously light. I opened it to find a fried bony fish skeleton on bread, six medium-sized shrimp, and mini-hushpuppies. The 'mullet' was fileted, and I was given the bony middle part, just the spine and fins, barely any meat. The bones didn't taste bad but not like mullet. For nearly $20, no drink, no fries, just hushpuppies, seasoned bones, and baby shrimp, with lemon wedges on the side.
Still hungry. Very disappointed. Won't be back. The only good thing I will say is that the flavor on the seasoning was on point. It's possible that I could have been a regular while visiting Tallahassee if the food was...
