After nearly 30 years away from Sonny’s BBQ—yes, thirty—I found myself back at the Monroe Street location in Tallahassee… and let me tell you, I was blown away.
I won’t go into the reasons I stopped going all those years ago, but let’s just say it was enough to keep me away from any Sonny’s, anywhere. And I’ve been to a lot—19 different locations spanning North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, back when Sonny’s was my go-to.
But this visit? This visit was a total 180.
From the moment I stepped inside, the atmosphere had a fresh, welcoming vibe. The place looked great, the service was spot-on, and my waitress was attentive without hovering—just the way it should be.
Now for the food and the reason for -⭐️… I ordered brisket, ribs, and a pulled pork sandwich with that tangy vinegar-based sauce—and every bite was excellent with 1 exception. Not “good for a chain,” not “better than expected”—but truly, lip-smackin’, fall-off-the-bone, back-to-Sonny’s-for-good kind of excellent. The ribs were better than i remembered. The brisket was good but not as good as it couldve been considering they use highest technology equipped appliances and a pitmaster at every location. *For clarification that informative tid bit wasn't a knock it was actually a pat on the back that they care enough about their customers to go to such lengths so they stay the best. Im sure the follow critique happens very seldom and doesnt over shadow my true feelings about my visit. My last and final negative comment couldve easily knocked 2 more stars off and that is the pulled pork sandwich which was saved by the ingredients, the construction, presentation, and taste. But, literally every bite had cartilage, bone, more than likely missed when cleaning. It wont hurt you and doesn't actually alter the taste but you will miss enjoying the sandwich concentrating on other things. Now, with that being said, this wasn’t just a meal. This was a return home for an old-school Sonny’s fan who never thought he’d walk back through those doors. Well, I did. And I’m glad I did. After 30 years, they won me back. And that’s...
Read moreThis review will stay untill we return and have better experience. Was the food good? Yes it was great. They did give some really wimpy center cut ribs though. Some of us had great ribs that would compare to best in town while some of us had ribs that should never have made it to the plate if they want to upkeep there reputation. This building has recently been remodeled. Let's just say for a fun group experience the main section is great Love the outdoor eating area as well. We do really miss the old salad bar look and country feel of Sunny's. Please don't change all locations like this!!!!! The modern look brought new furniture which are not the comfort feel we have grown to love for decades. This experience was not good with our waiter as even though he was never rude he did not handle the wait situation well. The place was not extremely busy and we waited over 45 minutes to our food. We had two toddlers with us! They also messed up two of our plates. Finally a manager came over to give us the fix plate and apologized for the inconveniences. He gave us 10% off. Though this was nice and Sunnys doesn't owe us anything in life. You expect to be taken care of better then we where. Sunnys is know for great food with speed. We planned our night around this and ended up being very late to our next activity for the night. 10% off was a weak gesture for the 50 minute wait on our food where we then still had two messed up plates. Do we usually love Sunny's? Yes. But this new remodeling will keep us away from this location when family comes into town to visit. Usually we bring a solid 8-10 person crowd. The wait and some of the ribs received hurt the reputation we where used to. Will be willing to give an updated review if a better experience is had at this location next time we go. If we ever go back to this location
Usually expect some of the best ribs, pulled pork, fried okra, garlic bread, fried chicken tenders and sliced...
Read moreWe came here for a birthday dinner for my dad. Service wasn't the best, appetizers came out with the food, orders were not correct, 2 people out of our party did not receive food on time. It came out after everybody was almost done eating and they only had burgers. Long story short, my dad left his birthday cards that were given to him by his young granddaughter and daughter. I called back within 30 minutes after leaving Sonny's the young lady on the phone put me on hold to go see if the waitress who had us (not going to say his name) seen them. She came back on the phone and said he had already left for the night and to call back at 9:30 when they close to see if they turn up. I call back at 9:27 to talk with someone, after no help from her I asked to speak to the manager. She was very helpful she viewed the cameras and even had the someone looked in the bust table buckets. So they found the birthday cards and receipt but no gift cards which was a total of 3. SMH!! So apparently, Sonny's has thieves working for them 🤦♀️🤷. It's a shame that people steal, if you can take things from customers that means you can steal from everywhere else. I must say you're quite brave to steal like that with cameras inside Sonny's. My dad really only cared about the actual birthday cards that were in the envelopes. He wanted to go back and get them as we stay an hour away from this location. I feel as if the mgr on duty could've did things a little differently. She could've at least said "let us offer you with a gift card from Sonny's" since I know they were taken by one of my employees 😒. Nope just a sorry was all she said. Just let your thieving employees know they will have bad luck and if I were you keep and eye on them! Sincerely, Angry Daughter and...
