Chef Thai & Sushi — Restaurant in Tampa

Chef Thai & Sushi can be hard to find as it is tucked into the back corner of its shopping center on South Dale Mabry. Inside is relatively dark because of the black film on the windows. At my booth it looked as though the walls hadn't been wiped in quite a while. I started with the fried egg roll ($3.95). They served six egg rolls instead of the five reported on the menu, kind of like a bonus roll (they did it for everyone) The round crunchy rolls had good texture but not much more. It lacked taste and the uniformity of the size make me think that they are either store-bought or machine-made. For an entree I had the Amazing Chicken ($7.95). They describe it as steamed broccoli topped with chicken and peanut sauce. There wasn't much broccoli, but what was there was steamed to an appropriate al dente crunch. The rest of the dish was drowned and overwhelmed by what tasted like sweet peanut butter. There was an abundant amount of chicken but I couldn't taste it through the thick peanut sauce. Adding soy sauce helped a little but there's no compensating for the strong sweet peanut butter taste. I would rate the food and cleanliness one star, but they get some points for ambience with jazzy piano music and a cool fish tank. The service was fast and friendly. Chef Thai and Sushi is closed temporarily due to construction issues, a large hole in the concrete block building. It was hit by car. Probably weeks or months. Will update when there is news.

Prior review: Chef Thai and Sushi, delightful locally owned Thai. Technically the address says 1155 S Dale Mabry Hwy Suite 22, but the building is a large shopping plaza that goes all the way around to W Watrous and Henderson Blvd. A better address suggestion might be across the street from 3825 Henderson Blvd. try 27°55'58.41" N 82°30'23.86" W. I spoke with the host today to confirm the new post-Covid hours, shown on the edited take-out menu below. The menu says 11am but she penciled in 11:30 and close 8:00pm, friday & saturday 9:00pm. I'm always looking for reasonably priced sushi restaurants to enjoy with my semi-vegan daughter, even though I'm not much of a sushi connoisseur... and Chef Thai & Sushi was a great find for us! Inside, the dining area is small but not cramped, and features a large fish tank right by the entrance. Our server was friendly, and patient while we decided what to order... their menu is huge! Since we'd been in the mood for sushi when we decided on this restaurant, we chose a few rolls but noticed so many other items sounded delicious, too. OK, I know it's not true sushi, but I LOVED the fried chicken roll! I also enjoyed the Tampa Roll & California Roll. And Maddie loved her miso soup, King Kong Roll & Lychee Boba Tea, too. We're definitely looking forward to another...
