So it's very hard, and I know everybody has their opinion "just as I do" to do these reviews but here goes one that is close to my heart. I was looking for Nigerian food closer to me here in FL and there was a lot of smoke in the reviews about TFK. I came here on 6/21/23 and had an amazing experience despite the bad reviews that the restaurant had both on yelp and google. I held reviewing the restaurant till today 7/15/23. I did this, so I could also try the competition in the Tampa area before giving an honest review:
Let's start with things I've eaten here: Suya Jollof rice with assorted meats (goat, beef, chicken) Plantain Egusi with assorted meats (goat, beef, tripe) Amala Fufu White rice with stew - goat, beef and chicken
Reviews: Suya - 5/5 - I was definitely left salivating and wanting more.
Pros: This will definitely open up that appetite you have. TFK killed it - only thing missing was the newspaper the malam back home wrap it in (if you know, you know).
Cons: Quantity. Wish I had more meat but I also understand things are expensive these days and can't fault there.
Jollof rice with assorted meats - 5/5 - another killer dish served on a board - not traditional plate - loved the presentation for
Pros: The meats and plantain complemented everything nicely. It's just right
Cons: I'm a big rice guy. You get pre measured portion but when it is that good however, you want more
Egusi and assorted meats / Amala / Fufu - 5/5 - TFK why why why... now I have to drive and spend more money - has arrived
Pros: Flavor on flavor on flavor - the stew and egusi complemented each other. Licking my fingers Amala was on point. I had to get the fufu as well to make sure I was still kicking. Goat meat, beef and tripe are to die for with this combination.
Cons: None here. Everything was perfect.
Summary:
I spent over $200 in total on my 2 visits here. Dined-in and also ordered to-go as I live 2 hours south of Tampa. Good food, good people are hard to come by but I'll tell you that TFK not only embodies both but their Food speaks for itself. We all have different taste buds but I can definitely vouch for the things I've had the pleasure of consuming here. I wish them nothing but success and hope they continue to get even...
Read moreThey have the best equsi soup in Tampa but also take the longest to prepare from all the other restaurants that serve the soups. It use to take 45mins now its up to an hour wait. I drive almost an hour craving their Nigerian delicious 🤤 food. I really liked going to them every single month after my doctors appointment, but I was sold cold food that tasted like it was warmed up.and I know it was warmed up because I would come every single month. The chicken was really tough and me and my sister was very disappointed because they do have the best equsi soup in Tampa. They did replace our food with a fresh order but by the time we got it, we were no longer hungry. I think they can do a lot better if they were a lil faster in the kitchen or have somethings pre done while still being hot and not left over from yesterday or day before. That’s what confused me when they say they cook their food to order. I still say they have the best equsi soup and pounded yams. I’m just scared to waste my money on the chicken again. The chicken use to be really juicy and falling off the bone now it’s just too tough to eat. I really wanted some last month but was pushing for time when they said it would be an hour wait. Ugh 😩 also when that girl that take orders seem like she don’t like working there. It’s always no excitement to take our orders it’s like she always have an attitude until we pick up our food. My opinion to that is I think someone else should take the orders. I be ready just to cancel my whole order. But the equsi is like crack I just gotta have it. I LOVE THE MANAGER. She is so sweet and know how to run her business. I wish she was there when I come. I rather ordering from her and if I dine she make sure our experience is very much enjoyed. Great food best one in Tampa no one else have yet...
Read moreI recently dined at TFK African restaurant and had the opportunity to try their egusi soup. I must say, the flavor of the egusi soup was undeniably delicious, and it showcased the rich and diverse culinary traditions of African cuisine.
However, there were certain aspects of the dining experience that left room for improvement. One notable concern was the portion size in relation to the price. Priced at nearly $30, the portion of egusi soup I received felt inadequate, especially when compared to similar offerings in other establishments. In my previous dining experiences in Los Angeles, I've enjoyed equally delicious egusi soup at a lower price point, often with portions substantial enough to serve two people or even take some home for later.
Additionally, I requested the dish to be prepared spicy, but unfortunately, the level of spiciness fell short of my expectations. I was expecting a more pronounced kick of heat, but the dish was relatively mild.
Service also left much to be desired. As a first-time patron, I expected a more welcoming and hospitable experience. The service was, regrettably, almost non-existent, which can impact the overall dining experience negatively.
Furthermore, I'd like to highlight that the menu prices at TFK African restaurant may not accurately reflect the final bill. It's advisable for diners to inquire about the actual prices of their selections before making a purchase to avoid any surprises.
In summary, TFK African restaurant offers a tantalizing taste of African cuisine, particularly with their egusi soup. However, improvements in portion sizes, spiciness customization, service quality, and pricing transparency would greatly enhance the overall...
