I love Yummy House! I've been to this location on Hillsborough Avenue for lunch many times. I always find something tasty. I've had so many different things off their lunch menu (such as the spicy yummy combo), but this time I decided to try something new. We got the shanghai style dumplings (soup dumplings) off of the dim sum menu as well as the salt & pepper chicken wings as appetizers. Both of these were fantastic! I could taste the pork and ginger in these rather large dumplings. There was quite a bit of soup in them as well. The wings were so tasty with their special blend of spices including cilantro, garlic, and red chili. I'd get both of these again. I'd say anything with that salt & pepper seasoning is good except with the fried eggplant.
I got the orange chicken off of the dinner menu at lunch. Please note that dinner menu items don't come with rice. No big deal because it's just $1 more. I know many people complain about that but I just think of it as part of the full meal price. I actually didn't need to get the white rice because my friend ordered the seafood fried rice with spicy XO sauce. She offered it to me since it's such a large portion. That rice was so wonderful! I kept wanting more. I kind of wished I had ordered it for myself. The orange chicken was good and had mandarin orange slices in it. I just wish it had more of an orange flavor to it. It was mostly sweet, but still good and a very large portion. My husband liked the leftovers after I heated them up later. The hot chrysanthemum tea is strong on chrysanthemum, but good. I prefer the jasmine green tea.
It's a large and spacious restaurant, but go early. It gets packed because it's very popular. We arrived at 11:00 am and it was already packed when we left around noon. Dim sum is only served at lunch. Rice is also included if you order from the lunch menu. They have larger group tables with lazy susan turntables in the middle which is great for family style meals and dim sum. I also noticed that they've renovated the interior to look more modern. The interior had some of the exterior wall art that you see at the South Tampa location.
I'm looking forward to going back for more lunch visits. I want to get the braised eggplant in oyster sauce next time and more of that yummy seafood rice. I also need more of that salt & pepper chicken...
Read moreWe decidedly held off for about 3 months and opted to go to Yummy House China Bistro for our first Chinese food experience in Tampa, Florida. We were happy with our experience as Yummy House definitely delivered when it came to the flavor profile of all their dishes. The Yummy House-Hillsborough Ave was the closest one to us from Lutz and definitely worth the drive for a dine-in Chinese restaurant.
The first hot-take on the restaurant from the outside along with the interior design and relative aspects gives off "Asian-fusion" vibes. There is definitely a very modernistic appeal from the overall design and ambiance inside the restaurant. There seems like a banquet-type setting available for large parties or private gatherings. The waiters/servers also come around with tablets to take your order which again, gives off a "fusion-y " vibe. However, the menu and food immediately removes any confusion or doubt on the authenticity of the cuisine.
When it comes to Chinese cuisine, Yummy House definitely takes on the Cantonese style influence. The dead-give away is with the snow pea tips menu item and dish (which is an outstanding vegetable dish by the way). Additionally, there is a good section of salt and pepper dishes which also warrants recognition (their calamari is definitely done in this style - while deep fried, there is a slightly sweeter taste, whilst garnished with fried garlic and shallot bits along with spicy peppers so different than what you would find at an Italian restaurant or pizzeria).
The plates are definitely served family style and portions, respectively which was nice. As a family of 4, we were more than satiated with an appetizer dish, a soup (crab meat corn - a hit with our oldest daughter), a meat (sizzling beef short ribs and asparagus) and a vegetable dish (snow pea tips with roasted garlic). All these had great flavor. The beef short ribs deserved special acknowledgement with its rich but not overbearing flavor and sauce while the garlic cloves in snow pea tips were tender and delicious.
Overall, Yummy House China Bistro is great place to take your family for a...
Read moreHow can you go wrong with choosing a restaurant with a 4.5 star rating from over 1,000 people? All I can think of is that business and ratings are that good that on off days you slack off. I read some of the negative reviews and there are many things I would let slide but when you expose children's health and that of an entire family because of negligence, I believe, it is noteworthy.
Attached are pictures of undercooked chicken. The limitations of my camera and poor lighting do not fully show the red (not pink) in the chicken. We fortunately caught it as blood dripped into the plate. We initially believed it to be a sauce but upon opening the chicken we confirmed it was not cooked properly.
Please Google "UNDER COOKED CHICKEN". For everyone who has been sick from under cooked chicken, fish or turkey you can attest that it can be extremely unpleasant and you do not want to expose your children.
YUMMY HOUSE looks like a nice restaurant and my experiences from such places include managers being apologetic and ready to offer compensation in the form of extra attention and even waiving the entire bill when they really pride themselves on great service, great products and value the rating of every single customer and not just the vast majority. Sadly, in our case, the server attempted taking the plate immediately and replacing it with better cooked chicken. We kept the dish, took pictures and requested to speak with the manager. I'll give the manager 10/10 for manners and diplomacy but going on as to why it was under cooked was unacceptable and making the same offer as the server did not get my vote of confidence. Pleas keep in mind, we are dealing with a major health risk that can place you in the hospital and depending on your health condition, prior to setting your heart on a nice meal in a nice restaurant with great ratings, can turn a wonderful outing with the family into a nightmare fast.
I'm thinking that the health department has not paid this business a visit lately. Such things should not be left unnoticed and should be dealt...
