A colleague mentioned this restaurant to me years ago. I tried it today and was overall disappointed. While everyone has bad days, redeeming oneself when doing so in a customer service business environment is critical. I walked in an hour or so before closing, and an older man sitting at a table to my left wearing an apron never greeted me. After standing near the entrance to determine whether they had servers, I asked the gentleman if I should have a seat or go to what looked like a window/counter to place my order. He pointed to the counter, and I approached it as if an older woman had come to take my order. As I looked over the menu on the wall above the counter, she kindly told me they were out of some items listed.
I asked what items were unavailable, and she offered me a verbal list. As a breast cancer survivor, I very seldom allow my food and drinks to be placed directly on styrofoam, and that was the take-out packaging used.
I was told by my Oncologist 20 years ago about the danger styrofoam poses; it has cancer-causing chemicals that activate when hot or cold is applied. I asked the lady if it was possible to line the container with parchment paper or foil before placing the food. She responded by giving me a look of disbelief. After being rude, she asked the cook to put the food on foil. The gentleman who delivered my food as I waited for it presented the bag, hanging it beside my face without speaking. No one in the establishment greeted me or offered a thank you or a proper goodbye.
I am a massive supporter of black-owned businesses when they earn it. Good customer service is most important, and I've noticed that too many black-owned service businesses do not have it! Some black companies do not show enough respect for black people who try to prioritize their businesses. Not enough smiles, patience, or...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOkay this is my first time commenting on any establishment, but let me tell you this little place is AMAZING!
I work at the HEB down the way I kept seeing curbside orders for this place and finally after a month or so decided to give this place a try. It's a little hole in the wall mom and pop cozy feel to it.
I ordered the spaghetti special it came with two side. I decided to go with the Mac and cheese and candied yams.
And oh my! It was AMAZING!
The spaghetti was cooked perfectly and seasoned just right.
The mac and cheese was SO good ,full of the right amount of cheese and flavor ,again noodles cooked perfectly.
And don't get me started on the candied yams. Nearly fell out my chair when I took a bite. Sooo good , nice and sweet reminded me of the holidays.
After my shift at work the food I ordered made my day.
My only small complaint was the corn bread was a bit dry , but no big deal I put some butter on it and all was well.
Definitely coming back again to try more of their items.
Found my new food spot, they'll be seeing...
Ā Ā Ā Read more2020- Unfortunately we almost didn't order from here because of the negative reviews; however, thankfully we decided to take the chance, and I am so glad that we did! I had the smothered pork chops & rice, a side of black eyed peas, macaroni, & cornbread. The food was amazing, & portions were huge. I was only able to eat half, but cant wait to eat the rest later! I have no idea why anyone complained about the macaroni or cornbread, because it was delicious! We also had the brisket sandwich & boudain, & my hubby said it was really good. If you are doubting trying this place because of the bad reviews, I can assure you that they are mistaken! Do not miss out on this place! I look forward to taking our family here!
1/7/23 update- I still crave these smothered pork chops at least once a month! I swear these are the best and the yams are hands down the best I have ever had from a restaurant! If you have not tried this place, do not...
