First time going to this ice cream parlor, there were 5 customers in the shop and 6 young teen employees walking in and out of the back room sipping sodas and enjoying their day. Trouble is the employees were not paying any attention to people in line or sitting at the tables. We sat at a table and for 10 minutes we were ignored. I had to ask three time before I got the teenagers attention to get someone to take our order. Finally one worker turned around and said “it’s self service, you’ve got to come to the counter”. When I went to the counter we were ignored. Four times they walked by and ignored us. Finally I had to raise my voice and tell them to take my order. I order three banana splits. Ten minutes later worker brought my order it was one scoop of ice cream in a styrofoam cup topped with strawberries. I told him I wanted three banana splits like an ice cream parlor serves, that’s what I ordered in the first place. He walked away a brought 2 dishes of ice cream with sliced bananas on it. Remember I ordered 3. A banana split is a whole banana split in two. Looks like I take this place off my ice cream adventures. The ice cream is very good but the 65 minute drive each way isn't worth the bad service, but it’s very unfortunate because the ice cream is excellent. On the way out my grandchildren wanted chocolate covered strawberries. I ordered a box of 4 and a box of 8. Both pink ribboned boxes were pretty but not now because there was chocolate and red strawberry finger prints on the outside of each box. I didn't I didn't notice the sloppy boxes until I gave them as gifts. Then my granddaughter looked at the outside of the boxes and said "yuck". 12 chocolate covered strawberries plus 6 pecan chocolate caramel turtles $37.90 The next day the owner called me to wholeheartedly apologize for the service and items we received. We talked several minutes and he offered me a gift card to come back and give it another try. I agreed I will post my 2nd...
Read moreFrom were they started from on commercial avenue in Chicago, the place now. Has the same feel when you walk into the place. From the old pictures on the walls to the counters that you said stand up by. To where you order from the fountain water that they have old fashioned type spickets speak more highly about them. Looking through the Glass seeing all the chocolate, will get anyone's mouth watering for a taste. Last time I was there I got to taffy Apple's and a chocolate banana split. Taffy apples taste the same from when I was a little boy. I'm 49 now. Taste the same. It just takes me back when my grandmother used to take us back when. That was when it was still in Chicago avenue it was connected to a movie theater that we went to then to gettys for the end of the day. It just bring back good memories by the way you used to be. Hope it's still there 50 years from now. Took my daughter that for a first ice cream sundae at the age of five I think. Just hope she can take her kids there and keep on taking them tell the next generation. I think I spoken too much about it All in all gayety's should be a landmark now word families could just enjoy your ice cream and candy come to see...
Read moreThis place has to be the most overrated place in history! People go ga-ga over this place, but I just don't get it. I am not impressed with them at all. First off, their whipped cream is terrible. The ice cream is not that great. And they are insanely expensive! I paid $25.00 for a sundae and 12 pieces of candy! Honestly, I would rather go to Dairy Queen and get a Blizzard or something. However, if you're looking for a specialty ice cream parlor, I would recommend Valpo Velvet in Valparaiso,IN. Like I previously stated, this place is way overrated. I think that the best way to describe Gayety's is that they get an A for presentation and style of the business, but they get a D- for taste. Unfortunately, I...
