Staff needs training and better supervision.
So I tried Handel's for the first time tonight and although the ice cream is very tasty, the service is terrible.
I ordered a strawberry sundae and a strawberry cheesecake chunk Hurricane. But I ended up with strawberry ice cream with fudge and whipped cream on top. I was a bit confused when I got home and realized that the order was incorrect.
When I ordered the specific flavored Hurricane I was asked what I wanted on it. I asked the guy if it was like a Blizzard and he said that it was. So I was extremely confused. As to why he was asking me for additional toppings. He then proceeded to tell me that the toppings were on the menu. They were not. Only ice cream flavors and Hurricane flavors.
He seemed new so I wanted to cut him some slack hoping that he'd get my order squared away by asking for assistance from manager or coworker. The sundae was placed in a "to go" type of cup so it seemed right although it was mashed into the cup. He then walked around confused as how to make the Hurricane. He finally received assistance from someone and 15-20 minutes later I received my order.
I was the only person in line when I ordered! There was a manager there because she was talking to the guy helping me about his schedule. Then she disappeared to the back. I understand that this location is only a few weeks old but usually new businesses have supervision helping employees learn the ropes until they're comfortable to work on their own. There was another employee who had trouble describing what a Hurricane was to another customer. That customer seemed confused as well then replied to the employee that he just wanted a brownie chunk Hurricane and nothing else on it.
Save yourself heartache and stick with simple scoops of ice cream unless the person taking your order seems experienced with making other items. I'm sure that they'll get the hang of it eventually and work out the kinks. The establishment should also have additional signs describing/explaining the other items on the menu similar to Brewster's. They only have about 10 pictures of random ice cream cones.
Again the ice cream is delicious and I highly...
Read moreAs good as Youngstown, Ohio!!
My parents were born and raised in Youngstown, Ohio. My sister and I (now in our 30s), would visit our family in Youngstown as children, and have the fondest memories of walking up to the window at Handels and getting a scoop of our favorite ice cream. Every summer growing up, our grandparents would take us almost daily while we were visiting, and it became tradition! The ice cream was unbeatable, and it was even better enjoying it with my grandparents and cousins. We cherished it, especially since it only existed in northeast Ohio!
Fast forward to 2020, and we get the news they are opening a Handel’s in Spring, Texas! We are elated, and make the drive from League City to Spring as soon as we can (the drive was over an hour, but sooo worth it.) We bring my nephews too, since they were also introduced to Handel’s while visiting family in Ohio. Everyone orders their favorites and some we’ve never tried before. We got the 4 scoop sampler. We ordered Cotton Candy (my personal favorite - I love the small chocolate chips in it!), chocoholic chunk, monkey business (not gonna lie this is my new favorite!!! Banana batter ice cream with brownie pieces and caramel ripple), chocolate marshmallow, and an Ohio favorite, Buckeye. Every single flavor was just as delicious as it was when we were kids, and we couldn’t believe we were eating Handel’s ice cream on Texas soil! We even brought dry ice and a cooler to bring quarts and pints home with us!
The service was great, but the ice cream was better. We are so happy and excited we get to continue this wonderful (and delicious!) tradition with our kids now. We look forward to making the hour plus drive regularly, and bringing some new friends to...
Read moreTheir ice cream is AMAZINGLY good! I know I'll hear flack for this, but I like it better than Blue Bell!
This is a "walk up to the window and order" kind of place. There are two round tables outside near the parking lot where you. An sit and eat. Each table will seat up to 8 people (but that'd be tight if all adults!)
I noticed a faucet on the side of the building that we used for our sticky fingers from the melted ice cream. It is probably not meant for public use, but nobody told us to stop.
They are generous with their portions! A 2-scoop cone is really like 2.5 scoops.
We tried the COCONUT CREAM PIE ice cream, plus RASPBERRY CHOCOLATE TRUFFLE, plus CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER BROWNIE, and their MANGO SORBET. All were incredibly tasty!
I posted pictures of all of their flavors and their menu. ALSO, right now they have a deal that you get a free single cone when you bring in a non-perishable item (one per person - until...
