As a child, I loved going to Bobo's Drive In. No matter how far away I live, whenever I'm in Topeka, I stop in for a double steak burger, onion rings, and a malt! The area around Bobo's has changed throughout the years, yet the memories have not. Intimate, inviting, and delicious, I'm greeted with big smiles as soon as I open the door. There's nothing like going to your favorite burger stop as a kid and feeling like a kid every time you arrive.
Some wonder how businesses with 76 years under their belt keep the feelings alive—well, that's Bobo's. The taste is still the same, the rush of excitement to sip down your favorite malt, shake, or root beer float. But the conversations you have with those you share a meal with are worth it. The small dining space, friendly smiles, and maybe, if you're lucky, seeing old familiar faces you once knew as a child come true. The memories of your past to your future all wrapped up in the great bite of apple pie à la mode.
One of my favorite memories is from January 2002, after delivering my son, during a snowstorm. I asked my husband to run down to Bobo's from Stormont Vail and grab me a double steak burger and a chocolate shake. Two of the best gifts I could ask for: a healthy son and a bite to eat because I was starving. Thank you for being a constant in my life. Thank you for your continued service in blessing me with fantastic memories and always being in Topeka when I return to visit the city...
Read moreFor the somewhat high prices one pays here, I was not happy at being informed that there are no "public" restroom facilities. This includes PAYING customers. They did produce some hand sanitizer (since what I'd wanted was to wash my hands before eating). However, my dining experience was negatively affected by this restroom issue and the off-hand attitude on the part of the staff about it. This was definately not an issue several years ago when one could freely use their "facilities". I ate quickly and left without really enjoying my meal so that, heaven forbid I actually did need a restroom, I wouldn't be caught short. IF and it's a big IF, I should go back, I shall stay in the car and either eat in same or take the food and go eat it somewhere else. I do not think it appropriate to have a restaurant where a paying customer does not have the right to attend to basic bodily functions. I've seriously considered filing a complaint with the health department over this issue. However, I shall put that off - for a short while at least - in order to give management a chance to clarify their position and reasoning on...
Read moreI've dined at Bobo's for many MANY years. I've enjoyed it for the most part. However, in recent years, I've noticed the quality and size portion take a nose dive while prices went up. Yeah yeah, inflation....I know. But my burger last week was smaller than the size of a baseball. The onion rings were so thin and overly crispy (borderline burnt), I would say it was about 5 onion strings no thincker than a rubberband each. For a small burger, no cheese or added toppings, and an order of onion rings, water to drink, it was nearly $14!!!! The onion rings tasted like they were cooked in old cooking oil, and the batter really had no flavor. Don't waste your time ordering fries or tots. Theyre frozen and taste like garbage. The inside dining area is filthy and needs a serious deep cleaning and face-lift. Paint peeling off the walls, the ceiling and light fixtures need work, and the floors need deep cleaned from corner to corner. Overall, it just needs revamped. It really just doesn't feel sanitary at this point. I like the staff but the quality and quantity/size/portion is...
